Fromm had some slow starts in 2018 games, and was given a chance to work through them while fields watched. That’s exactly what not being given a fair shot on the field looks like. The few times fields did get legit PT, he showed off a very accurate arm and speed.
Fromm struggled a bit with being out of rhythm due to Fields getting random playing time. You can argue that Fields should have been in more regularly or for longer periods of time, but that wouldn't have helped Fromm with the rhythm issues.

When Fields did get PT, he looked both good and bad. He showed a lot of promise but he did his one (look) and run a lot, as inexperienced DT QBs are prone to do. He showed some raw talent but nothing that would have unseated Fromm last season. Fields also split reps with the 1's in practices, which was likely a detriment to Fromm and help for Fields, so whether or not you or anyone else think he got a fair shake during game time, he certainly got a fair shake in practice, which is what CKS says matters most.

quote:

Kirby knew fields was gone if he picked Fromm, and he also knew Fromm was gone if he picked fields. Players like them don’t sit on the bench, as hurts and burrow have also proven.
It was a bad situation all around and a reason why I hate the de facto free agency that college football has. If Fields had to sit out a season, maybe he would have thought differently.

CKS was definitely in a hard spot. Fields hadn't shown that he was better (at the time) than Fromm and it wouldn't have been a good look to unseat a guy who took us to a national championship the season before when he wasn't struggling enough to justify it so that he didn't lose a top rated recruit. It would show a lack of loyalty and support of your players and it would show that the head coach can be manipulated into making game-time decisions based on the wants of the players rather than what is best for the team as a whole. Just not good.

quote:

He would still have his very accurate and strong arm to go with his legs. While his overall stats wouldn’t match what he is doing up north, they would likely be very good. The uga offense would be better off for it, while the Ohio state fans raged about burrow blowing up down south.
Our offense may be better off but maybe not. We don't actually know. Our problems haven't really been on Fromm this year, at least not the critical ones IMO. The reason Fromm has struggled from my perspective is because our receivers have struggled. I don't see how Fields would make our receivers better. Maybe Fields makes a few throws that Fromm misses but outside of a handful of those plays throughout the season, the main issue has been a lack of separation our receivers have been getting. Fields isn't going to solve that problem by himself.

This kind of stuff is why it’s so hard to take you serious on this subject. He was trying to connect with Pickens on a pass. May have worked if he had a strong arm, but he doesn’t, so it was a Terrible decision.
Everything I've seen/heard was that he was trying to throw it away. The ball was throw in Pickens' direction but that doesn't mean he was intended to catch the ball. If you can show where he had intended to have Pickens catch it, then I'll concede the circumstance, but it doesn't really change the nature of my argument, that he's to "blame" for one interception out of the three he's thrown this season. You're just arguing whether or not the blame is due to a bad decision or a bad throw. Doesn't really matter overall.

Fields didn’t get legit PT in these games, so this excuse doesn’t cut it. Fromm had early int and struggles vs Sc and mizzou. Fromm didn’t play good vs vols, and he was pure trash vs LSU. Imagine watching that crap, and not getting a fair shot to do better than that. Kirby wasn’t about to let Fields upstage Fromm. That’s not a fair shake.

Only split reps? That’s a detriment to both. When both did get to play, fields was no worse than very close to Fromm as a passer, and that’s not accounting for the added dimension of qbs runs that only one of them has. That alone should have earned him a fair shot on the field when Fromm struggled.

That’s the frommbot echo chamber you are hearing.

Considering the ball went directly to Pickens, I would say that’s evidence enough of his intentions.

A throwaway should have been into the feet of a wr, a mile over his head, or 6 yards ahead of him out of bounds.

Dabo handled everything differently, and they benefitted from his gutsy decision. Kirby didn’t give fields the same chance dabo gave Lawrence. Dabo wasn’t seen as manipulated or disloyal because he let it play out on the field for everyone to see. Kirby didn’t have the brains or the guts to do the same.

Stuck to the idea that missing open passing tds is a minor issue I see. I disagree and think they are critical mistakes.

And we are also missing all of those running yards and tds he would have, which would help alleviate other deficiencies in our offense in a way Fromm can’t do.

First, I'm just replying to the most recent post in this topic so not necessarily to djs.

Second, I was right there with the crowd that said yea, good riddance in the cancer that was Fields moving on.

Third, in retrospect I realize that it was a bad decision not offering Fields the starting position for this season in order to keep him in the fold. Here's why:
1. Yea, hiney sight as I call it is always we 20/20 so we see just how good Fields is at OSU; he might well be a key ingredient in winning another NC for OSU and he could have been for UGA as well.
2. When you recruit the #1 QB prospect in the nation, you must trust that extraordinary talent will pay off for you; clearly it has for OSU.
3. Super athletic dual-threat QB's are the key to winning a NC in today's college football environment. Auburn did it with Cam Newton. Clemson has done it with Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence. Alabama did it with Tua and now OSU looks like a NC level team with Fields at the helm.
4. In other words, sometimes you have to hope the talented/gifted athletic will be better for your football program over a more experienced/proven player like Fromm who has a lower ceiling. In hindsight that is what we should have done and will have to do in the future if we are serious about winning a NC.

No one is blaming Fromm for all of our offensive issues.

Nobody? Look at the thread title. Every week, it seems we have a new thread about Fromm. I'm one of the fe that points out the WRs, and you, yes, you argued that point.

So, if it isn't the WRs whose fault is it?

quote:

Everyone else is talking about fromm’s misses on open passes.
As I poiont ed out....literally every single QB in organized football misses at times. Tome Brady. Tua. Aaron Rodgers. Name a QB and I promise they have missed.

And, I have already said on numerous occasions and several times in this thread that Fromm deserves some of the blame. So, if we are saying the same thing why are you arguing with me?

Al I did was say that the WRs and the OC also deserved some of the blame and you began by defending the WRs.

How about dropping open TDs? Running incorrect routes? Giving up on routes?

Would you say those are critical? But you ignore those and when I point them out you gloss over them and defend the WRs. Of course missing open receivers is a problem.

But dude....we were playing in a monsoon. It is very difficult to get a grip on the football from a passing standpoint and while trying to catch the ball. I know you will argue the point, but that is why many teams go to a run heavy offense when it is raining, much less when it is a heavy, heavy downpour.

Focus on the posts in this thread, especially the ones in response to foo.

Those that miss more passes than others aren’t as good as those who miss less passes. Fromm has had more than a normal amount of missed ones this month.

Who has dropped an open td pass costing us 7 points?

The monsoon started in the 2nd q, and didn’t last long. Fromm also has small hands, which isn’t good for rain.

There were passes in which the receivers slowed a bit and then it was overthrown this year. But last year Hardman? You act as if there have been no dropped passes. I mean, if a pass is caught a receiver has a chance to break any of them. I mean, would you have thought Lindsey Scott's pass would go for a TD in 1980?

It was raining almost the entire game. maybe we watched different games? People act as if there is no difference in playing in the rain and playing under dry conditions.

Fromm also has small hands,
Okay. I guess we should never have recruited him?
In all seriousness, I don't know if he has small hands or not....but that is not good for a QB or a WR.

Well, when I focused, I saw people arguing that the WRs were not the problem when I brought that up. They are a part of the problem. Like I have been saying...it is a combination of a ton of things. Weather, WRs, OC, Fromm. For people to be mainly focusing on Fromm is bad, and wrong. Does he deserve a certain amount of blame? Sure. Like I said...if you agree that there is plenty of blame to be passed around why are you arguing with me? All I said was that the WRs and the OC also deserved blame.

Yep. Fromm is 5th in the SEC in completion %. Mond and Trask are ahead of him. Would you take either of them over Fromm? You might. I wouldn't.

There hasn’t been one dropped open td pass that was well thrown in 2019, so there is no reason to bring it up. That Hardman drop was in 17 vs Irish.

You used the word “monsoon”, and that kind of rain was short lived.

It’s merely part of his physical limitations.

Again, I am taking about open td passes. I wouldn’t be shocked if those other 2 guys were better at them.

Unless he gets hurt, he will be a top 3 pick in that draft. You're intentionally underselling how good he has been this season and how talented he is.
I haven't undersold anything. I've agreed that he's good. There's a reason he was so highly ranked coming out of high school and he's certainly doing what he needs to in order to get tOSU where they are.

What I'm attempting to do is go beyond the one player on either side to show how these quarterbacks are impacted by the success of those around them. Yes, Fields will likely be a high draft pick, but he has everything around him to make good use of his talents. Fromm is also a great QB, though of a different type, and this season he has not had everything he's needed to be successful.

People don’t act like their is no difference.

We do think that the rain shouldn’t result in the complete inability to move the ball through the air.
