It was mentioned here last week. He did it on the strip, sack, fumble. If he doesn't do it he may get the ball out. Hard to say because it's literally split seconds that make the difference, but I saw it on the replay and remembered someone commenting on it here last week.

I mentioned it before. It's not the first time this year it appeared to delay his motion just enough for his arm (or sometimes his body) to be hit right before releasing the ball . Occasionally he does multiple slaps as he's going through his progressions, but the thing that may be a problem is that he frequently does it after he's decided to throw and immediately before drawing his arm back, like a mental trigger to initiate his motion. If he could omit that one, I believe it would speed up his release.

His motion is well documented to be quirky and a tick slow. I think it’ll be a hinderance to his NFL prospects.

In college though, I don’t think it’s something that’s gonna hold him or Georgia back from success.

For all I know, it could be a common habit. But I do believe that it prolongs Gunner's release in some cases and has led to disrupted passes in the three game sample size I've looked at.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about. I'm pretty sure Gunner sees this lineman directly ahead of him, but he taps the ball quickly twice before he cocks his arm to throw. They show a slow-mo closeup replay a few seconds after the play. I believe Branch was the intended target but a disrupted pass like that is high risk to get picked off.

Yes Fromm spun the ball in his hands on his drop backs. But on quick screens he never did. It wasn’t some mental crutch. Same with Gunner. He pats it but as long as he doesn’t feel like he HAS to pat it, I couldn’t care less. Could be a timing thing for him.
