I think that was the Kira or the disgraced master. If it had been the guys there would have been more folks in the pic. 1 in front, and one to chop off his head after the guts had been cut out. Contrary to popular belief, you did not just stab yourself in the gut and bleed out. Instead you went in, up, across, and down which seems pretty intense as most folks would pass out after the initial penetration.

Mishima (see pic below) may have been the last ritual seppuku I remember when his coup failed in 1970. His kaishakunin also failed on the first and second attempt to behead him. After that public spectacle pretty sure nobody had the balls since. If it was today folks would be too busy taking selfies to get the job done. As to Mishima, pretty heady stuff considering he was a famous writer in the real world. Have not read any of his stuff since maybe the late 70's or early 80's.

ps, fook Hollywood for making a movie about ronin and having Keanu Reeves play the lead ronin and having no reality to the actual 47 ronin who became legend in Japan to this day.
