"I thought the arena was flat and the team was flat," coach Mark Fox said. "But I told them before the game, `You have to be able to play on days you don't feel good."
Read this quote and couldnt help but think that it is a subtle slap in the face to the bulldog nation. Maybe Im reading to much into it.
I think a slap in the face would be good for the bulldog faithless. We have a pretty good basketball team that could really use support. People have said for years they'd support the team if we were winning. We won 20 games last year and were 6 games over .500. Its time to jump on the band wagon and start supporting.

I can't say it was a slap in the face. I honestly doubt that was his intention... But I agree. The lower bowl tonight was pretty full but the uppers on the tv side were bare empty.
We really need to put students on that side of the Steg...

I do t think he meant it as a slap in the face so chalk that up as a 'lack of a better phrase.'
He was probably just responding to a question but i hope a big deal gets made out of it and more fans show up. I.E. David Justice in the world series.

Our students usually respond pretty well with success on the court. When I was an undergrad a couple years ago I remember there being lines of students an hour before tipoff outside the Steg.
Our main concern are the sidewalk fans and a-hole Oconee County fans during midweek games. It sickens me that during a midweek game (not tonight) our lower bowl ("faculty and staff and/or season holders") is less than half full when students are stuck in the uppers.

The arena was flat. Fox was just telling it like it is.

And AA should feel responsible for it too. I've already said my peace about the condition of Stegeman Coliseum

my son met Fox one time when foz was buying some suits. he found Fox to be pretty much a douche and irritating to deal with personally. Dude has put shitty team after shitty team on the floor and now wants total fan support?...uh huh..

I've never met the man, so I can't refute you saying he was irritating, but putting shitty team after shitty team on the floor just isn't true.
This year was make or break for him, but it looks like we are gonna make the dance, which will be his second time in six seasons. That's not stellar, or where we need to ultimately be, but he isn't putting shitty teams on the floor ever year.

what was subtle about it?

maybe our definition of shitty differs somewhat...man is a poor recruiter and has to pull miracles out of the air to even sniff the Dance. per this thread topic it is a bit premature to call out the fans for being a bit less than enthusiastic. might want to get his team to actually hit a few freethrows now and again..

I'd like to see your evidence?
@WGDawg
He could have come out and said he is disappointed in the fan support so far this season. Could have contained much more malice.
Again, WGDawg, you disagree with anything and everything I say so I don't really care for your opinion because its rarely logical. You're just on this mission to argue against anything that I say. Get a life!

I'll agree that he isn't a good recruiter.
quote:

What does this mean? He made the dance once as a 10 seed, and I'm willing to bet he makes the dance this year as something better. What miracles did we receive in 2010-11 to make the dance and what miracles have we received this year that will hopefully propel us to the dance?
Are you thinking of the tornado SEC tournament? That one may have been a miracle but Felton was the coach back then, not Fox.

Agree here. I wouldn't have said it, and I wish he didn't. I'm not defending Fox as a person, I just disagree strongly that he produces shitty team after shitty team. That just isn't true at all.

good shite. i like it.
as these wins keep rolling in....
"people will come, mark, they'll come to stegeman for reasons they cant even fathom. They'll turn up Lumpkin street not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at the ticket booth as innocent as children, longing for 1983. "Of course, we won't mind if you look around", you'll say, "It's only $2 per person". They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they'll walk out to the bleachers; get a free t-shirt and a chick-fil-a sandwich on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, places they ignored when they were children and cheered for other teams. And they'll watch the game and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so nonexistent they'll have to act like they've been fans all along. People will come Mark. The one constant through all the years, Mark, has been mediocre basketball. Georgia basketball has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But mediocre basketball has marked the time. This court, this game: it's not really a part of our past, Mark. It reminds us of all that once was average and that could be average again. Oh...people will come Mark. People will most definitely come.”

I've said it several times, I don't believe fox is a bad recruiter. He has found talent that others see. Just because he isn't getting high profile recruits doesn't mean he is a bad recruiter.

Something doesn't add up here. Isn't getting high profile recruits what good recruiters do?

Think of him as Pinkel at Mizzou

Pinkel will never, ever, ever even sniff a national title. The reason he's even "sniffed" an SEC title is due to how awful the east has been as a whole since they've been here. The 2 years UGA has been strong? 2-0 against missouri. Year where we stunk and lost 5 games? Lost to missouri. Throw in the fact UT and UF have been at practically historic lows as well.
Pinkel is doing in the east what Fox did last year. Last year was pretty damn bad overall for the SEC, and we ended up finishing 2nd behind Kentucky. Were we really good, or was the league down? Kind of a tough argument honestly. I think that Fox is certainly above average as a coach, but anyone can see his recruiting is lacking if we want to really make some noise.

No its not, high profile recruits do not always turnout to be as good as they are projected? Damien Wilkins is the perfect example. Instead Fox is finding talent that is not everybody sees.
Charles Mann mostly had mid-major offers for college and we've built a team around him. JJ Frazier only had one other offer according to yahoo sports and none according to 247 yet Frazier is one of the better 3 point shooters and PG's in the SEC. The best no but one of the better ones.
This to me shows how Mark Fox can see talent, recruit, and develop.
