Edge play

Pollack and others have mentioned sonce the start of the season that the biggest weakness on the defensive side of the ball is the edge play.
Is this something that can be improved as guys get coached up, or this going to be a chink in the armor going forward?

Kirby got a question about this in his press conference today.
To paraphase his answer-
We don't let people run north and south on us. We intentionally scheme to make teams run to the perimeter. When the are running east-west, that's better than running north-south. It's our defensive scheme to make sure they don't run north-south, which naturally opens up perimeter (edge) opportunities for the opponent. And of course we always have to get better at everything always.
End paraphrase.

Most of the edge issues that I have seen are related to ILB play and S play.
That doesn't mean our OLBs or DEs are perfect. But Walthour isn't going to be the guy chasing wide plays down.

Erk Russell said it better than anyone: Winners always have a bad case of the wants!

guess this explains why our edge LBs crash the middle while the ball carrier runs east-west

Kirby has said that the crashing in is by design. Kirby said they aren’t going to allow north/ south runners and want east/ west runners.
ETA actual quote:
Everybody has a defensive philosophy on how they play football. We don’t like balls to run north-south. So if the ball’s not running north-south, where’s it running? East-west. If it’s running east-west, where does it have to get to? The edge. Most of the runs we give up, by design, are on the edge. We’re not going to allow you to go north and south. If you go north and south on us, we’ve got bigger problems. If we can get it go sideways, we tend to think our speed runs it down.

This is the reason why Smart covets us establishing the dive on offense. He understands that when you prove you can run between the tackles for 4 plus yards, you limit what the defense can do, affect the pass rush on PA and wear them down.

it's impossible to argue with and i agree with the mindset/strategy 100%.
yeah our weakness is the random weird play on the outside that might spring a big gain, but we are stopping every small gain throughout the whole night and making sure the other team HAS to find a weird big gain on the outside on potentially a broken play even. and we think we are gonna stop those way more than the other team is gonna convert them. and we do.

I see this as coach speak.
I can only say that our national championship defenses did a much better job of containing the outside.
Hope this defense grows up but we seem to be lacking speed to contain on the outside.

someone mentioned in another thread but when you consider:
1) Those teams had Adam anderson and NOlan smith who are both ELITE OLBs, and
2) Those teams had mega-elite DLs which commanded so much attenbtion that it allowed the OLBs to operate more freely
it's no surpirse that this year's production will dip. We don't have that stout DL and we don't have the caliber of OLB we've had before. My hope is that the last few year's hauls of highly ranked dudes like Marvin Jones, M'Pemba, Gabe harris, walker, smith, etc will start to get it together.

Haven’t heard anything from M’Pemba this year

What do you base this on?

Jalon Walker got a sack against Kentucky, which broke the season-long OLB sack drought. So that was good.

Kentucky was the first traditional drop back passing team that would allow us to really get after the QB
Everyone else either played the quick game or kept the ball on the ground

North Carolina had nine sacks against South Carolina. Texas A&M had seven sacks against Auburn.

South Carolina went to the quick game. You watched it. You know it.
Auburn basically had an entirely new OC and gameplan (I didn't watch previous Auburn games... but it has been made very apparent that we saw almost zero film of what Auburn ran against us).
What they did against other teams has zero to do with the looks and gameplan that they threw at us.
Kentucky didn't change. One bit. And we saw how well UGA utilized film and preparation for their offense.
