Kirby always forces a team to play one handed.

2017 against Missouri, we took away their running game. We held them to 59 yards on 25 attempts (0 rushing TDs). Missouri did beat us twice passing over the top, converted on a short field, and sustained 1 drive on the defense to finish with 250 yards in the air and 4 passing TDs.

2018, we wanted to take away Drew Lock. We cut him to 47% completion, 4.6 ypa, 0 TDs, and 1 INT. However the running game mustered 4 rushing TDs on 172 yards. (This was when Rochester was NT before Jordan Davis cracked the rotation).

2019, we schemed the running game and allowed Taylor Powell the opportunity to beat our DBs one on one. Mizzou ran for 50 yards at 2.08 per attempt. Powell completed 34% of his passes for 4.8 ypa for 80 yards. Half of that was to Nance on underneath stuff and half to Albert O in man coverage.

All of that to ask... do we try to shut down Briles and alpaca in the passing game? Or take away the run game and see if Franks can make enough plays against our DBs for them to put up 7s?

I suspect we just overwhelm all facets of their game given a massive talent differential and a first year coach.

I presume that you mean we play them straight up. No tendency to either side.

I thought about including that option. Even if we work to shut down the run game, players like Stokes, Campbell, Daniels, Stevenson/Webb, and Lecounte are strong enough to win their job and not get beat over the top or in the red zone.

And vice versa (jordan Davis impacts the interior run game so much that it frees up other defenders to make plays inside and outside... even if we arent devoting to run blitzes or numbers in the box).

I could see us playing straight up. But kirby usually wants to take away what they do best.

Honestly I think you are on to something shutting down their run game and making Frank's throw but I don't know what extra resource we would have to commit to stop the run. Maybe some stunts/blitz's to stop the run on the way to franks in passing situations.

This defense has a mission to create havok.

I think that is what we see.

I would imagine that we'll take away Boyd and the run game and make the Alpaca beat us through the air.

Franks was clueless against our pass rush in 2017 and 2018. He'll be worried every time he calls a pass play.

Could be famous last words but I really ain’t worried about franks, nor do I think he’s going to just flip the switch and be joe burrow this year. Only thing he ever did was throw that frickin bomb to beat tennesee

I was gonna give him the shout out. Franks is Frank's.

I was surprised to see Lecounte beat on that TD (2 INTs made up for it). And having Stevenson covering speedster slot receivers doesnt look like the best strategy. But we have a damn fine defense.

but I don't think the spread is far off especially if the defense gets us some points (which they will)

Not too shabby.

How did you think Condon played today? I really wasn't watching em that much.

I never wanted to touch the spread. Too many things happen in a season opener. I was chicken shite.

But the under in this game was easy peasy.

I got nervous early on with a few busted coverages (lecounte getting beat deep?). But going into the game, I never thought Arkansas was going to score more than 10 points.

I noticed him a few times which is not a good thing. The Arkansas edge players were getting way upfield and wide. Mathis was getting deep on his drops and basically making it easy on those edge rushers to get into his face.

Early on, I was surprised that we weren't attacking the B gap more with the razorback edge guys running themselves out of the play. Later on, we started to take advantage of that aggressiveness.

As for Condon, he struggled to keep up with that upfield arc. But at some point it is up to the OC to take advantage of that style of defense.

They struggled to run against AU so I'd imagine we'll try and take away the pass vs them. Williams made some great plays yesterday.

This^^^^

Davis clogs up the middle regardless of how we play behind him on 1st and 2nd down. Even if we go 2-4-5 (or 2-3-6), we should have speed that can get to the sidelines and be exotic enough in our pressures to keep Nix guessing.
I dont know enough about Auburns personnel to guess how we will match on the backend (Anderson, Stevens, Webb,Daniels, or Burns/Smith). New OC/playcaller as well.
