More of the full video, and Van Halen's best song. It syncs up well!

Bro…

Unchained
Little Guitars
Everybody Wants Some
Panama

Although the guitar solo at the end of DDL is one of his best IMO.

I like the Drums, such big drum sound, Led Zeppelin sounding on that song (until Eddie goes apeshit). Like you are in the room with the drummer.

Bro, you left out Runnin' With the Devil. A song so good even Phish covered it.

I know it’s sacrilege but Running with the Devil isn’t one of my favorites and no where near as good as those I listed. I think it gets a lot of love because it’s the first song on VH1 that everyone heard. Jamie’s Crying, Feel Your Love, Ain’t Talking bout Love are all better songs on that album IMO.

And I was a huge fan, had all of the tapes, posters in my room, etc.

If memory serves, wasn't VH1 soft rock/pop-centric when it first started?

I was referring to Van Halen 1….not VH1.

Having only messed around with an electric a little bit it’s hard to imagine how clean you have to be in picking with his set up where any contact with any string you don’t want is going to ring out.

Dude was an absolute maestro and the best electric guitarist ever IMO.

The production on 1984 was outstanding and almost made it sound like a different band. The decision to go loud and bright vs their previous sound which was more muffled with distortion was a game changer. It would’ve been great to see what they could’ve done from there if Eddie and DLR could’ve kept their egos in check.

ETA: Alex definitely leveled up on 1984 too. Crazy good all the way through.

EVER. Grew up listening to them. In the early days, he didn’t use pedals. Got all of those sounds without them. Freaking genius.

Did you watch what I posted?

About half of it…I’ve seen it before. Went down many a late night YT rabbit hole on VH…especially about all of the craziness. I always thought it was 50/50 with Eddie and Roth but after what they did to Michael Anthony and hearing more from DLR I’m convinced Eddie was batshit crazy.

Which is to be expected with a savant. RIP.

There was enough to go around - Roth retard and EVH ego. Made some crazy good music though until it all blew apart.

Re listening to 1984 this morning. Every song is badass…Jump may be my least favorite because of the synthesizer and it was their biggest commercial hit.

To me personally, Somebody Get me a Doctor is not only VH's best song, but one of the most perfect hard rock songs ever.

-It's right in the sweet spot time-wise, not too long or short
-Kick arse guitar intro, followed by a kickass drum intro to really bring you along for the ride
-talks about partying
-nice little interlude to catch your breath
-follows up with more arse kicking

It boggles the mind that that song is never, ever played on radio or really anywhere. Whenever anything Van Halen is played in any kind of mainstream format (radio, commercial, movies, whatever) it's guaranteed to be Jump, Panama, etc. Don't even get me started on Jump, it's truly a shame that was their only #1 hit.

IIRC it was their first real video too and it hit right when MTV became a thing so it got played over and over. Panama as well.

That helped push it and it was their most mainstream song other than Dance the Night away. Other than that, Dancing with the Devil and Eruption/You Really Got Me were the only songs you’d ever hear on the radio and that was 96 Rock only.
