Bama fans largely are being unusually realistic about their expectations. Here's their wish list...

TOP CANDIDATE/S

– Kirby (they seemed to have accepted that this ain't happening, however)

TIER 2

- Lanning (a lot of "he might be too young and unproven," but at the same time Bama fans seems to realize that it still might be the best option they got

- Sarkisian

- Kiffin (right up there with Sarkisian and Lanning on the wish list, which seems somewhat surprising)

TIER 3

- Demeco Ryans

TIER 5,377

- Dabo (absolutely no love for Dabo. Amazing how fast that star has faded)

I think Demeco Ryans is tier 1 and, like Kirby, imposslble.

News breaking that Lanning is staying at Oregon.

Bama women better be careful tonight.

I've maintained all along that it'll be Lane when all is said and done.

He has the temperament to be able to handle the pressure of that job and being the guy who followed tGOAT.

I think it will be Kiffin.
Sarkisian and Kiffin both coached at Bama recently.
Sarkisian is set in a similar job at Texas while a move to Bama as HC would be a huge set up for Kiffin.
Kiffin will be able to continue the high level of recruiting at Bama. He just needs to find a good DC.

Lane allegedly burned too many bridges in Ttown to ever get offered the job.

I saw him in Jacksonville a few months ago. He’s just as funny as he was 10 years ago.

I remember when the Bear retired. It's similar to that era that the next guy has to follow a legend. They had a few good years under Stallings but otherwise they had 3 decades of mediocrity where the 3rd or 4th best team in the SEC. LSU, Florida, Tennessee, and Auburn passed them.

It seems odd that Saban would not have been grooming an assistant to take over.
Apparently there was no planning for his retirement otherwise they would have someone lined up to take the job.

Makes you think he wasn't intending to retire, but a health or life event came up that forced his hand.

Saban made a public statement saying that there aren't any health issues in his family driving his retirement.
But apparently he surveyed the current state of college football and made the decision to get out and frankly at 72, I can't say I blame him.

he looks really good for 72 and I assume he has other interest and wants to spend the time with his family in his later years.
