It has become a mental thing with Bama now. Just like used to be with Florida.

The 90s they were vastly superior to us but there were plenty of times under Richt that we were clearly the better team and it was 100% mentla, as youv'e said.

I don't think that's the case with alabama. Since 2008 they have bene far and away the best program in CFB and more often than not have the best roster in america. Them and OSU are probably the only 2 teams that can go toe to toe, top to bottom with our roster as far as talent. I don't think the fact that we keep losing to them signifies some big mental thing, they are simply a great team.

In the kirby era they were undoubtedly the better team in 2018 and 2020 so there's nothing mental about that. In 2017 and 2023 I'd say we were mostly even and both games reflected that on the scoreboard. We were definitely better in 2021 and went 1-1 against them.

Point being...with UF we would lose to clearly inferior teams while with bama we are losing to a team that more often than not is either clearly better than us or at least is our equal.

I think it’s a mental thing and more importantly that they have a lot of really good players.

Coach Smart's reply to his thoughts on being 1-6 against Bama in his time in Athens was absolutely brilliant:

quote:

On being 1-6 vs. Alabama…

“I don’t know, what’s everybody else’s record against them, you know? Has anybody got one better than one and six, that’s played them six times? I don’t think so. I think they’ve got really good players. They’ve got a great program. I got an immense amount of respect for them. They do a great job. I mean, Nick’s recruited good players, Kalen’s got good players in here. It’s a tough battle. Of those ones, I mean, two of them have been here, you know? And they’ve been tough, they’ve been really tough battles. So, a lot of credit to those guys, a lot of respect for them.”

They are still in the hunt.

There exists a scenario with previous teams where those disappointing performances acted as a galvanizing fire for the guys - DSOR 2017, redeemed in the SECCG; SECCG vs Bama 2021, redeemed in the CFP title game.

The question is - will they respond to this loss by circling the wagons and getting better for it? I'd like to think so. They didn't quit on Saturday, and played their asses off for the final 42 mins of the game. Beck still made some boneheaded decisions, but I think he got the demons out. Ol' boy was straight up seeing GHOSTS in the first half.

Time will tell us if this loss' fire refines them or defines them.

Won’t matter. If opposing defenses continue to change coverages, Beck can’t read it.

So much this, we almost completed one of the greatest comebacks in college football in Tuscaloosa of all places. You doomers can bitch and moan all you want but the fact is that even when down 30-7 at halftime the team didn’t give up and turned the tables completely on Bama. Will be interesting to see how we respond against Auburn and of course when we go to Texas in a few weeks then we get to see what the team is truly made of
