Overall I would say it is very similar based on recruit rankings. I only did top 5 because of the effort it takes pull the data and post it, but I think that should give a semi accurate snapshot. I know I included some guys at A&M that are no longer here. I did so because I didn't know who of ND's players were still there. I wanted to keep it as close to apples to apples as I could without extensive knowledge of ND's program.
Now, this is only recruiting rankings and not how they have performed since. I would argue 3* Dodson is our best player listed. Same goes for ND, their best player wasn't super highly ranked, but low 4* Tevon Coney.
The point I wanted to make (not disprove) is the cupboard is NOT bare. I would expect immediate improvement in year one from Elko. I am not calling for top 10 in scoring and total D, but there is room for significant improvement without being that high.
2017
Total D: 408.5, 78th
Scoring D: 30.7, 87th
Yard / Play: 5.63, 68th

Completely agree. If Jimbo's offense can have sustained drives it will go even further to protect the defense. Sumlin's offense did no favors for the defense in TOP or plays run. I think that in and of itself will produce results.

Thanks for doing this analysis.
And yes, it’s certainly true that our defense from and including Sherman’s last season until now has been handicapped by being coupled to an offense that either went 3 and out or scored in 3 plays. We need better talent for sure, but I think this year’s defense was top 50 if it wasn’t kneecapped by an offense that would 3 and out 5 times in a row.
