Discarding for a minute the Florida State game, which was technically a "preseason game", these were the scores.
A&M 28, Louisiana Tech 7
A&M 24, at Southern Miss 6
A&M 28, North Texas 9
A&M 24, at Kansas 21
A&M 28, #2 Nebraska 21
A&M 35, at Baylor 14
A&M 17, #25 Texas Tech 10
A&M 17, at Oklahoma State 6
A&M 29, Oklahoma 0
A&M 17, #13 Missouri 14
at t.u. 26, A&M 24
You think our offense is shitty now? We were rotating quarterbacks through game 4 of that season before finally settling on McCown, whose first start was the Kansas game.
Even with the three losses, the 1998 defense only allowed more than 28 points once (Kansas State in double overtime)

The Mighty Gulf Coast Offense....
I have a feeling many of our games will play out in this manner.

Defense does win, but we can do better than that. We aren't the same program as the 90s version.

'98 was a good defense but it wasn't like this one. This one is more like the '91 D or the D's from the '80s that just punished people and you expected 3 and outs or turnovers.
This is a much more explosive offense as well, we didn't have this many weapons in '98. Remember Shane Lechler was often called our best player. This offense has warts but it's a hell of a lot more talented. The '98 D played gutsy and tough but not dominant like this one. To put it simply that team overperformed and had some luck. This team is loaded with NFL talent and playmakers, they just have to put it together.

Different times.
Offenses are much more prolific than they were back in the day. The rulebook has also shifted to protect the offense more than the defense.

That's true. But our offense in '98 and '99 left a lot to be desired.
