I still think he's going to prove to be a great hire, but right now, man, we're putrid.

Putrid is kind of extreme.

We're not that terrible. Sure they need some work, but I think that as the year progresses, so will our line. They need time to learn everything they didn't get the chance to learn from BJ.

We've held them to 21, this isn't on the D
Points are an important metric, but you have to look at them in the context of the game. That was a 1950s-paced game and in that context, our D played pretty terrible. We didn't really stop their run game all night.
As a disclaimer, they got called for some holding, but they got away with a hell of a lot more. I mean that was the worst uncalled holding since 2014 Auburn. They weren't just holding, they were tugging jerseys and pulling shoulder pads on almost every snap.

I just want to see progress from the beginning of the season to the end. Unlike last year where it felt Like their objective was maintaining the status quo.

I think Arkansas D line isn't that bad. This weekend we are going to learn a lot about our O line vs state. I'm expecting us to go more up tempo this week also.
Progress would be nice.

O line play is hard for the us fans to see. The play that jumped out at me was the counter play that Tra scored on. The run blocking is definitely coming along. The pass blocking will come along with experience for the young guys. They are growing. I like it.
ETA Also the read option in the red zone that Kyle kept would have walked in if he was able to get it to Tra. Read in the presser write up that Kyle didn't give it because he did not have it held right and was afraid of fumbling it.

Yea, but they didn't even try for (or make) any big plays. They wanted to get 5-7 yards every play, and they were able to do that on the grand majority of the snaps.
The TOP game is a two-edged sword, with the other side being that a single penalty or bad play can ruin an otherwise promising drive. That happened on a few drives which let us stay in the game. Obviously the ultimate goal is to score points, and they didn't get to pay dirt enough. Too many promising drives ended early for them.
But make no mistake, they generally did what they wanted and accomplished their goals. If the refs had swallowed their whistles on a couple more holding calls, we would have been in big trouble.

On the other hand, the refs probably no called 40% of their holds and they probably should have had 100 less passing and 50 less rushing yards.

Yea I was happy to just get out with a W with the way it played out. I wasn't happy with the defense (they got 6-7 yards/play basically at will), but at the same time, I don't think it means too much for the rest of the season. We're not going to play that combo of huge OL + good RBs + good QB the rest of the year. Alabama and LSU both have great lines and RBs, but they don't have the threat at QB that Arkansas does.

That brought back a memory of Matt Darwin. I doubt the person to whom you spoke goes back that far, but it was nice to be reminded of Matt. He was friends with one of my roommates and I had a class with him. I just did a quick google to see what I could see. I remembered him playing for the Eagles, but totally forgot he was originally drafted by the Cowboys (just a few picks after they took Herschel Walker) nor did I recall he went through the draft a second time (I wonder the last time someone did that). Oh well, I'm off topic. Just thought I'd throw the name out there in case it brought back memories for anyone else.

I put this into a post on the recruiting thread but I'll say it here as well, talked to someone close to the program and he talked to DC today and DC says we are 2 years away on the oline from where he wants it to be.

That's honestly not the end of the world. Our OL is far from great this year, but they're also nowhere near some of the true dumpster fire OLs we've seen in the past (2008 and to a lesser extent 2009 come to mind). Those lines doomed our offense against any semi-competent DL. This group's a lot better than that. I'd say they're average i.e. they'll hold up a decent bit of the time and we can still win games with them, especially if we move Allen around (I don't know if you all have noticed, but he's been great when he's rolled out of the pocket).
If they take a nice step forward this offseason along with the next predicted step by the defense, that'd set us up for a pretty darn nice 2016 season. It is a shame, though. This offense would be flat-out nasty with a moderately improved OL.
