I like to read articles at Texas Tribune to keep up on state government news. Texas Tribune just published a very good article on the athletic department finances of the 8 state universities in Texas that participate in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
You can easily see overall revenue and expense at the department level as well as a breakout by major sport. You can also compare information across multiple schools.
Very well done.

I have not posted links on this board before. Just added the link. Also updated the original message. Information is only for state universities. Nothing included for Baylor or TCU.

Summary for those of us who are dumb?

Our AD is very profitable and should be in good shape to invest further in existing sports and add new ones.
This snapshot shows us with over an $80,000,000 operating profit. We are currently 8 times more profitable than our friends in Austin. Mainly because their AD expense level is much higher than ours. That is why they continue to focus on revenue versus operating profit.

I don't think we want to be profitable. The big reason it is so high is due to donations for Kyle. I think in a more normal year we will be around 130-140 M in revenue.
Our next big rounds of spending & fundraising IMO should focus on Outdoor T&F, Softball, OF seating at Olsen, and Premium Seating at Reed.

That number is inncorrect, they are somehow counting 70mm in stadium renovation donations in that.

I am guessing that they look at fundraising as a normal source of AD revenue that will fluctuate year to year. As long as they are accounting for fundraising/capital contributions consistently across all 8 school's numbers, this is still an apple-to-apples comparison of the relative strength of each AD for this snapshot.

We just completed a 480 Million dollar renovation. No one else did anything similar.

Very true. Donations will fluctuate. Just shows we have great strength in fundraising when our boosters are energized.
Even if you back out 70 million we are still in the black over 10 million.

Which would be incredible considering the fact that pre-SEC (2011) we didn't even pull in $90 million.
I am so glad we didn't listen to Hyman's concept that the optimal situation was 95k seats. Not only is having the state's biggest stadium a point of pride, but it allows for revenues that keep us in line with other top programs without needing their merchandising power. I guess his thought was in bad years we will have empty seats, but I would argue that pressure will make the program have to be better than it might otherwise be.

Men's soccer thanks. And whatever toss away women's sport needed to make it happen, lacrosse perhaps.
