Disclaimer: I don't follow the daily details about the Hogs, just the headline worthy news about the team.
The injury bug has bitten the Hogs' offense pretty hard. Similar to what's happened to Notre Dame. Tough to fault Bielema for players breaking bones. They're just having to make do with whom is available now.
Their defense lost several good players to graduation/NFL, I think. Bielema seemed to embrace the high preseason expectations about his team, so he must have felt good about this side of the ball. It appears that Bielema simply believed the players taking their place would step in and perform well enough to get the job done.
From what I saw in the Texas Tech game, that is just not the case. Maybe the staff just misjudged what they had there. It happens. We Ags saw Snyder do that on a few players, such as Baggs and Mastrogiovanni.
I tell you one thing, the Tech offense seemed to have a significant foot speed advantage over the Hogs defense. That's not something a coach can fix in a week.
The Hogs are likely gonna just try to play a zone defense, keep the play in front of them, try to get some turnovers (we've been careless with ball security), and maybe we'll commit stupid penalties to stop some drives. I don't think they will try much man to man, because of the team speed issue. Limit the big plays. Make us put together a 12 play drive.
Hogs turned a fake punt into a TD last year on us. I expect them to go to the well again since it worked before on us. Fake field goal, onside kick, who knows. How about a pooch kickoff? We blew that last week, not bothering to field it.
Our team makes mistakes. Hogs game plan might just be to let us keep making them.

I only watched about 10-15 minutes worth of their game time against Tech, but Tech was making them look like our defense from last year. It looked pretty bad.

I have a bad feeling about this game for some reason. Maybe it's because everyone is counting pig out, and they have nothing to lose, or my pessimistic personality, but I just don't like it.

When I was watching ARKvsTech, it looked to me alot like Tech was playing a middle of the pack Big10 team. Like Iowa, for example. Bielema's modus operandi appears to be to just do the same thing at Arkansas that he did at Wisconsin, so I guess this shouldn't come as a surprise.
Time will tell whether this will work. The state of Arkansas just doesn't produce alot of players. So he has to go out of state to recruit the bulk of the roster.
For that to work, the perception of the program outside of the state needs to be high enough to convince really good players that it WILL work. Bielema really needs to put up some good wins to bolster his case. Because right now there is doubt on where the program is going.
It feels like this is a pivotal game for the Hogs. It Bielema can right the ship this week, it could turn around the season. If they lose (particularly if they lose badly), the bottom could drop out and they could go into a free fall like the John L. Smith year.
I don't whether Bielema will try to fake us out with trick plays and misdirection just to try to make something happen...or double down and do exactly what he did against Tech.

Technically it will be the only 1-2 team we will face all year. Since, ya know, after this week all teams will have 4 games down....

It is just strange right now. A few of us are over on the Hog board trying to point out reasons why they are going to make it a game. I was looking forward to some good back and forth with the Pigs this week. I has sad

I'm no doctor, but wouldn't fattening up and making your team heavier have anything to do with this? Maybe poor conditioning that focuses too much on size and strength instead of flexibility and speed.
I know that no linemen have been hurt, but the size differences are staggering. There's the SEC, and then there's Arkansas. Having to adjust your game preparations to the mammoths in your line must have something to do with it. Some of these guys aren't used to speed.
Like I said, I'm talking out of my arse, but you can't ignore the size.
Average offensive line weight (by team)
Arkansas — 321.1
Ole Miss — 313.4
South Carolina — 310.4
Vanderbilt — 309.5
Kentucky — 308.3
LSU — 307.8
Alabama — 303.6
Tennessee — 303.3
Mississippi State — 302.5
Auburn — 300.6
Texas A&M — 295.8
Florida — 295.3
Georgia — 291.1
Mizzou — 289.5

I don't like seeing our SWC brethren down. This place is at its best when they're in vintage form.
In fairness to them, though, the start of this season and the injuries have to kind of feel like getting the rug yanked out from under them. Especially after the high they ended last season on and the expectations it bred. I hate injuries on the college level with a passion and hate it for any fanbase that has to deal with them.

I just don't see how you can link broken bones to some kind of flaw in the Hogs strength and conditioning program.
I mean Romo broke his collar bone and Dez broke a bone in his foot. Is that Garrett's fault?

They only have two "blue chip" offensive lineman on the team (Kirkland and Ragnow). Most Arkansas fans believe Kirkland is playing out of position and is too big to be effective at OT. It seems very similar to the discussion that is going on currently concerning Germain Ifedi. They use a ton of 12 formation and may move Kody Walker back to fullback.
I expect A&M to possibly utilize Julian Obioha and James Lockhart opposite of Garrett. I would use Dae Dae in passing downs opposite of Hunter Henry to stop short passing routes.

Oh I agree with you. You can have the best conditioning in the world and still get bit by the injury bug. People need to realize that that comes with the territory of a sport as violent as football.
As safe as we can try to make the game and as much conditioning is emphasized, a lot of these injuries just come down to shitty luck.

It was sarcasm brah.
The rant would be interesting this week if both teams were undefeated.

I just noticed Toledo plays Arkansas St this week. If St wins, it may be a tough week for Arkansas on top of losing to A&M.
