"We need to start landing elite recruits like 2012"

But if we don't, let's blow it all up and start from scratch AGAIN, cause that will solve everything.

Was thinking more 2014 than 2012

But I've never said "blow it up". In fact, I've said the exact opposite.

Tren'Davian Dickson is asking out of Waco. Was supposed to pick A&M before surprisingly picking Baylor.

Good to hear then.

We have the best staff in place since I have been following Aggie Football. That makes me optimistic.

We do have a great staff. But that's just one half of the equation. The other is landing the best talent possible from your recruiting regions.

Sumlin and his staff have been given a golden opportunity, and they're not exactly seizing the moment.

I honestly think Sumlin and gang did a great job capitalizing on the JFF momentum in recruiting when we had it. The problem is momentum is gone and we don't have anything to replace it, in fact we have the opposite.

They did do a good job at first, which is what makes the last 12-18 months so frustrating. This staff is capable, they just need to close the deal and quit shooting themselves in the foot every other step.

I don't think the last 12-18 months was a failure in recruiting. In fact the way they pulled back Mack for the 2015 NSD was pretty huge.

The failure is a failure in coaching, a failure in getting the results needed to continue to continue to do well in recruiting. Two different things.

It wasn't a failure and Ive never used that word to describe it. But the '15 &' 16 classes were setup as potential goldmines and it was indisputably much less successful than it could/should have been.

And a lot of it is due to teams with just as much, if not more, turmoil surrounding their own programs out-recruiting us. Which is pretty troubling.

Fair enough, I wasn't trying to put words in your mouth. I apologize.

Examples?

I assume you mean Texas? Except in their minds they are one Tom Herman hire away from winning big with all that talent Charlie collected.

LSU? They tried to fire Les but in their failure it solidified his position, like some failed third world coup (VERY fitting analogy)

Baylor? I think we can all see that was a mirage.

I just can't think of a program that had a worse offseason than us that is outrecruiting us.

I feel like the issue is why we had such a crappy offseason to begin with and not the other way around.

Texas & LSU

Auburn picking up Mond/Ausbon would continue to trend

We need to ban some of these crappy posters. Get this stuff off out recruiting boards so our recruits don't see these trolls posting.

Are you that weak-minded, that anything less than pure sunshine is considered trolling?

I'm a HUGE Sumlin critic, but how the hell is calling him names and insulting his character going to assist A&M's recruiting. It just ends up on other message boards as fodder.

Sumlin is also the HC and like a CEO his job is to hire and fire. These kids get recruited by an area coordinator and their position coach.

Recruiting took a dip when A&M lost David Beaty as the DFW recruiting area coordinator to KU.

A&M's struggled to recruit well at linebacker since Mark Snyder left and was replaced with Mark Hagen. Hagen first replaced by Chavis and them ultimately fired. Chavis took over and while he didn't set the world on fire, he did get his #1 target in Tyrel Dodson. Mazzone will get first crack at Aaron Hansford, but he could end up playing some OLB. He was an Under Armour All-American at that position and Mazzone has let players play both ways at UCLA. He often used defensive tackles as fullbacks and Myles Jack played on both sides of the ball too.

They did very well at offensive line recruiting last year, but they did lose Patrick Hudson and Greg Little under Dave Christensen's watch. He was fired. Jim Turner is off to a good if not great start.

A&M didn't have a defensive tackle coach at the end of last season after firing Mark Hagen who switched to defensive line after Chavis took over linebackers. Brick Haley was targeted, but ultimately he chose to stay in Austin because of his special needs child. The book hasn't completely closed because David Turner may end up getting 2 very good prospects in both Ratu Mafileo and TD Moton. Don't forget that Justin Madubuike (5* Scout.com) may also play at the position.

This current staff has not seemed very lazy. They are off to a great start with a top 20 recruiting class and over 160 offers. They are taking part in several satellite
camps and have started a summer barbecue event like LSU.

It won't show up in recruiting rankings, but they convinced Trevor Knight and Kalvin Cline to transfer. They have several potential late additions to the 2016 class and several talented Preferred Walk-ons entering the program who could have played at other DI programs.

We didn't have a DT coach before Hagen was moved there. It was Coach Price's line

So what was Terry Price doing for 3 years if Hagen was moved to "defensive line"?

A&M wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire at linebacker recruiting when Snyder was here. Let's take a look at the linebackers recruited on his watch:

Darion Claiborne - Arrested
Reggie Chevis - moved to DL
Tommy Sanders - role player at best
Brett Wade - played 2 games then retired
Jordan Mastrogiovanni - We'll see if Chavis' coaching can revive his career
Otaro Alaka
Josh Walker - injury prone

The hit rate for linebackers under Snyder was 14% (28% if Walker does anything). Shaan Washington was a safety who was spun down to linebacker

Let's look at the linebackers recruited SINCE Snyder left:

Richard Moore
Landis Durham - to be seen whether he stays linebacker or goes SDE
Claude George - TBD
Riley Garner - solid backup
Dwaine Thomas - solid special teams player
Tyrel Dotson - TBD

Justin Dunning will likely spin down to linebacker
