At this point, we have had a bunch of games that are going to be a drag on our overall RPI. But we don't really have future games that will. ACU is probably the only future opponent that will finish sub 200 RPI. And the SEC plays 30 conference games whereas someone like the Big 12 only plays 24.

TCU for instance has 2 OOC weekend series still to play and both are going to be RPI killers. Even if they sweep it's going to be negative, just like PV was for us. But they are filling 6 games, not one while we are playing SEC opponents (everyone plays shitty midweeks).. They also still have a Kansas weekend series at home and 3 midweek games with ACU (wtf???) so it's possible they have 12 RPI killer games still to play

I was looking at tu's schedule and I think they had 12 games left vs teams outside the top 100 including 6 vs KU and BU.

top 100 isn't bad. It's the real dogs like ACU and PV that hurt. Baylor is borderline 100 RPI right now and they should pick it up just due to schedule and they are bound to win a few. Kansas...well, they kinda suck so it wouldn't shock me to see them in the mid 100s at year end.

But the sips play both KU and BU on the road so the RPI hit won't be that much. They played 4 @Rice and @Stanford and also filled their Big 12 Bye Week with Nebraska while most of the others filled it with dregs. Augie knows how to schedule to not hurt himself. He spent years at Fullerton having to do that. The sips will have a very solid SOS

Scheduled starters this weekend

FRIDAY: #38 Grayson Long (Jr., RHP, 4-0, 2.20 ERA) vs. #20 Taylor Guilbeau (Sr, LHP , 2-1, 2.56 ERA)

SATURDAY: #31 Matt Kent (Jr., LHP, 5-0, 2.80 ERA) vs. #18 Will Carter (Jr., RHP, 1-2, 4.50 ERA)

SUNDAY: #23 Turner Larkins (Fr., RHP, 2-0, 2.33 ERA) vs. #15 Geoffrey Bramblett (So, RHP , 3-1, 3.90 ERA)

Btw, look for Sunday's game to get moved up. I think it's going to rain and the Saturday game is scheduled as an afternoon one so my bet is we try to play two.

Farmer curious your thoughts (or anyone else who follows this EKG)...

I have not at all been impressed with Hill. Simonds had 9 CG last year in JUCO ball. I like having him in long relief but I also worry that we may need another starter at some point and I'd like to stretch him out to prep him. I also would very much like to beat Rice in a few weeks.

Would you consider moving Simonds to midweek starter? Or is he too important to the pen (plus Hill's development)?

Simonds has been a machine for us, for sure.
I not only think it's a solid possibility that he gets the keys to the car, I think it's all but a given.
You may recall that he was projected by several baseball folks (preseason) to be our Tuesday starter.

He's been fantastic in relief--and it'd be great to keep him there if we had that option.
But I think losing Stubblefield & Minter negates that luxury; at some point, their absences are going to catch up to us.
I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Simonds get the start v UTSA or Sam over the next couple if weeks.

I think you move him to midweek. You don't want to drop one of those midweek games, and I would want him starting a game having to come out of a losers bracket in the postseason over Hill.

While Hill hasn't been as good as some of our other starters. Take a look at his 3 starts.

vs IW
5.1 IP, 0 R, 4 H

vs UTPA
2.2 IP, 1 R, 4 H

vs PVAM
4.2 IP, 2 R, 4 H

Only given up 3 runs in 3 starts, but he's also pitched very few innings in his starts. Clearly if there is a weak link on our staff, its him. But I'm not so sure you yank him at this point. Its going to take a bold move, especially if we are still undefeated come Tuesday @UTSA. The pressure will be huge. I like the idea of being proactive and not reactive. Kind of a non committal answer, but I think either way may work out fine.

And note that there are no more 5 game weeks left on the schedule so no opportunities to get him in there without an injury and yanking someone. With as much confidence as I have in Ty, Hendrix, and Ecker, maybe we should go ahead and give Simonds a shot.

I like the comp to Stripling but it suggests his upside is pretty absurd. Stripling actually didn't start a game as a fish. He jumped from the bullpen to Saturday starter in 2010 but he didn't really blow up til his Junior year.

I was pretty high on Stubblefield coming into the year and I think Larkins has that same sort of stuff. It's potentially a Wacha/Stripling or Granger/Wunsch type of thing where you have two guys that are elite. Hate to think of future when the team is 22-0 but we're going to have a silly good staff again next year.

Don't forget about minter. Depending on his recovery he could be back next year. He's got to make something happen his SR year for the draft.

yeah, I don't think you can predict the JRs though. Any of Minter, Long, and Kent could be back. Hell even a guy like we've been talking about in Simonds is another option. I'd guess at least one of those guys is back but it's all going to depend on where they get drafted.

That probably bodes well with our deep pen and likely overall deeper lineup.

yeah I think the two biggest factors are bullpens and catchers. We normally split Saturday/Sunday catching duty anyway and we have a very deep pen. Don't know enough about Bama to say how it changes things for them.

I do think I would give strong consideration to flipping Kent and Larkins though. I know RC likes to go R/L/R or L/R/L when possible to make platoon guys sit on the bench a day but with them both throwing Saturday, I think I'd rather have Kent go last so we know the bullpen situation. He's a guy you can pile innings on if need be but going first you wouldn't know if you need him to.

Did some checking on their roster. Not sure how accurate this is, but they have 6 catchers on the roster. It looks like only 2 have played significant time and only one has done well, that's Kyle Overstreet. He's probably their 4th best hitter this year based on the #s. But he's listed at INF/C on the roster so who knows if he's even been playing C. Will Haynie is the other. He doesn't have as many starts, but he's their worst hitter that plays somewhat regularly.

Edit: after more digging it looks like Overstreet plays 2nd. Guess Will Haynie is the guy. He's 6-51with 24 Ks. Ouch!
