It's amazing that so many people think their class is so great based on their top 5 rating, but they fail to realize it's because they had so many committed so early. I'd be shocked if they finished in the top 20 if all of these kids offers are honored.

I actually think the spin on this is also ugly for a new coach. Well Brown had a top 10 class but [insert new coach] was unable to close and it ended up ranked #18.
It's a piece of the negative narrative that arises with any new hire when things aren't going perfectly. [Insert new coach] lost to [insert any team] by 20 points. He sucks. And his recruiting sucks. He was unable to close.
That negative vibe leads others down the same path whether it be other fans, rivals, or recruits and once that momentum builds, it takes extraordinary changes to overcome. See Razorbacks, Arkansas.

Just frick Nike U, seriously, it looks like they did a really good job with nacho on his visit. How they haven't been destroyed by the NCAA is unbelievable. We need to figure out how they aren't getting caught

where are you seeing this? I'm somewhat curious if the pay sites are saying it or if it's just rumors. 247 is showing 96% (24 of 25 predictions) to A&M and the Ducks 247 site was less than optimistic in their post-visit update
responses to article:
"I would love to get him but it sounds like the coaches still have some serious ground to make up prior to signing day. "
"I'm a little surprised by the comments. I thought we were in great shape going in. Those aren't promising, IMO."
He hasn't yet scheduled his OV with us but should in January (though he supposedly will commit at all-star game). But I heard he might visit for one of our bowl practices possibly late this week. Basically everything I've heard from our side is extremely positive.

Are Allen and Sumner-Gardner now signees as well?

Nope. Allen will be on campus in January but he wont be able to officially sign his LOI until signing day

The only thing that is worse than this is when you see a school that gets a high rating based on commits from several players that have no chance of getting in. One thing that drove me insane about RC is he would get you excited about a class based on 4 or 5 big stud commits with a bunch of "meh". Then only 1 or 2 of the big guys would ever end up on campus, either going JUCO or into the abyss entirely.
It showed me that he was more concerned about trying to keep up the perception of recruiting well than actually recruiting well. Sherman and Fran also had some of this issue as well.
One thing I like a lot about Sumlin is he will drop the grade risks before signing day. So far we have had 1 signee not enroll I believe (Ed Ray). He gets very aggressive in January to make sure who is going to make it in and who won't and he isn't afraid to drop even someone like Derrick Griffin that if he could get in would have been a National Top 25 Talent easily. This year it will be interesting to see what he does with Hoza.

The point I am making btw is RC/Fran/Sumlin would end up signing classes that were ranked 10-25 but if you look at who actually made it to campus the classes were significantly lower than that. It was very short term thinking by spending lots of effort to get kids signature that would never actually play for A&M. I was shocked to see Stoops essentially try for the same thing when he signed that DL that we dropped because he wasn't going to get in last year. Just shows how far OU has fallen.
I see this as a much bigger problem than getting huge classes to boost recruiting rankings. Any school that isn't right on the 85 Scholarship limit is just stupid. Having large classes also allows for you to have last minute attrition. I love how Sumlin keeps recruiting right up until the end, regardless of who is committed. He's always got a backup plan.

I read an interview with Hoza's Dad a week or so ago where he said that they didn't expect to receive a LOI. Sounded like Hoza never really got his shite together despite reports that he did.

this has more to do with SEC recruiting rules than Sumlin himself. In any other conference, there would be no downside to signing these kids. It's why he signed Ray (we were technically under Big 12 rules). However, the SEC limits you to 25 LOIs per calendar year so if a kid signs and doesn't qualify you are SOL.
We may risk a few going forward but given how woefully undermanned we were when he took over, he couldn't afford to miss and lose an LOI. Hell we did this and still ended up 6-7 scholarship players short this year.
