We've brought in some serious talent in the last few weeks. Hats off to Sumlin and staff as usual.

Sumlin and Co may be THE best recruiters. I'm in awe.

Since ESPN & others have linked Sumlin to the USC job, all he has done is land 2 5*'s and 2 4*'s (one of which happens to be the #1 JUCO OT)

I think Sumlin is happy right where he's at

So does Elumenor start at RT or at DT next year?

given our OL recruiting, figured I'd pencil out our Oline for 2014

SR (4): Ogbuehi, Harrison, Compton, Gramling
JR (3): Mike Matthews, Cheek, Eluemunor
SO (3): Ifedi, Stuckey, Tipoti
RFR (1): Wilson
TFR (4): Gustafsson, Martin, Ledwik, Davis

I don't know Sumlin/Anderson's ideal numbers but iirc Sherman's ideal was 18 guys in total (which makes sense given 22 starting positions X3 = 66 giving you 19 extra schollies for specialists/4th teamers). So we're still 3 short of that with that setup. Attrition here has caught us a bit.

I know that this staff wants to redshirt every single OLman if possible. So at the very least you need 10 non-true fish for a 2-deep. Right now we'd be at 11 which is pretty tight (though we only have 10 this year) and at 10 if Ogbuehi left. The bigger problem in my mind is that only 4 of those are really tackles (Ced, Cheek, Eluemunor, and Stuckey). And with 4 seniors, you'll also need a big class in 2015 just to keep numbers. As it stands right now with zero extra attrition, we'd again be at a bare bones 11 in 2015. So I fully expect we'll bring in one more JUCO tackle and probably at least one more freshman.

and since I'm thinking about it, here's a look at the DL

SR (3): Stansbury, Robinson, Tyrell Taylor
JR (2): Obioha, Zo Williams
SO (5): Tyrone Taylor, Golden, Hall, Walker, Arnold
RFR (2): Manning, Points
TFR (4): Washington, Johnson, Garrett, Cunningham

Same deal. We'd like to shirt all incoming freshmen but freakish DLmen are usually better equipped to play as freshmen. Also our weaker numbers have made it rather hard to do til now. We're on 16 which is probably about where they want to be. We'd still take a few more obviously if they were the right ones.

The split is also looking pretty good between ends and tackles. My guess is next year Garrett plays and the other 3 redshirt which gives us 13 guys for the 4 spots and a good distribution by position:

WDE - Hall, Taylor, Taylor, Garrett
DT - Williams, Manning, Points
NT - Golden, Walker, Robinson
SDE - Stansbury, Obioha, Arnold

Couple guys can slide positions as well which gives them an opportunity to really push each other. If the DTs aren't getting it done you can move Walker to DT from NT or Arnold from SDE. SDEs not getting it done Garrett could move right off or one of the DTs could move outside. And it's just a better looking depth chart than now because we have no seniors this year now that Ennis is out. Everyone ages and has more experience.

FYI, one reason everyone backed off is grades. My guess is he got a decent test score though as he's now taking OVs and suddenly we're back in it (you can't take an OV til you take a test). I wouldn't rule out a flip if he's really open but it's hard to say.

Just another blip, at the 5-star challenge, he and Kyle Allen were on same 7on7 team and he shared his thoughts:
quote:

"That's the first time I've ever seen him," Cannon said. "He's a real good quarterback and makes great decisions. He can throw that deep ball and the slant right on point. He can do everything. He's the best quarterback I've ever played with."

They were then paired up in 7on7 again at The Opening btw.

Not sure of our chances either. He seemed really flaky if I remember correctly earlier in the year with visits.

WTF?

Am I just making shite up or did I hear that he had a possible career ending injury a month or so ago?

he had an absolutely devastating concussion as he got knocked cold for several minutes. The after effects included a pinched nerve in his arm (he had trouble moving one side for a day or two) and a bruised spinal cord. By all accounts it was pretty scary at the time and I don't believe he has played since but he is recovering well and should be fine afaik

I know we have been keeping contact but we do that with a lot of prospects for a just in case type situation. I'm rather shocked we're hosting him actually because I'm not sure under what scenario we'd take him. I guess if one of our RBs inexplicably declared and Nixon decommitted or something.
