Really not even worried? He wants to win a NC. We aren't even close to sniffing an SEC east championship. UGA & Clemson are light years ahead of us

I’ve watched him play, he’s not Trey Smith

I've considered him decommitted for weeks now. Make a good hire and he'll come back. If not, frick him.

In fairness, plenty of players who've been top 10 recruits have failed spectacularly compared to Trey Smith -- Smith is as close to a true prodigy as I've ever seen on OL. That just doesn't come around often even among those ranked among the best of the best.

He played against Maryville and really didn't do much. He's just bigger than everyone else, and holds all the time. That won't be the case in college.

That's typically the case for the majority of OL recruits and exactly why it's 1. hard to project OL (recruiting services constantly struggle in that area) and 2. why the way Trey Smith has been playing is so goddamn amazing -- with OL there's not just body development but technique development and there's barely any technique taught at the lower levels.

As an aside... I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this has less to do with coaching and more to do with seeing Trey Smith slide in at OT and play very well. If the next coach wants Smith at OT (and likely he will given how well he performed) that still leaves very stiff competition for the other tackle spot with Richmond, Tatum, and Hall having experience and talent.

This is a great point. Guys like Cade Mays want to play in the NFL. If you spend most of your career on the bench, that becomes more complicated.

Hopefully, Gruden pulls him back in.

I'd agree with you except we have a true freshman also starting who is expected to slide to LT next year with several other high profile ol fighting for that rt spot.

I think it has more to do with the uncertainty at UT and him wanting to cover all of his bases.

This... pretty sure most see Mays as a more likely RT prospect on anything other than a pretty depleted roster at this time... not to say he won't develop, but on UGA's roster, he'd be challenging at RT initially at best.

At this point, UT figuring out the hire is going to be important, and quickly. There just isn't a lot of time for them to "unfrick" this situation that they've seemingly allowed to fester by hanging on to Butch through the season, given that Mays wants to commit in December and enroll early.
