Yeah but not all are exactly the same law. Plus factor in the police enforcement and how poorly the law has been toward minorities, it is no surprise his parents would feel that way.
When a guy gets shot for looking for a cigarette in is a car at his own mothers house by the Police because somebody suspected him for being a robber (he was black), then anything basically can happen in that state.
