VOLS could sign 33; entertaining idea of gray-shirting Berry twins

Tennessee currently has 28 commits and they have room to enroll 30.

JUCO WR Kameel Jackson will likely be told to GTFO and I would look for at least one other casualty from the class. That gives the Vols 4 more spots.

Would mean the VOLS will likely sign have room for Malone, Mosley, Reed and one more.

quote:

Evan and Elliot Berry, the twin younger brothers of former Tennessee star Eric Berry, have not yet committed to the Vols, even as the class rapidly fills up. Shurburtt said one or both could be gray-shirt candidates.

"They may be two guys that they want to ask to gray-shirt, to be honest. I don't really know of any other program that's at the level of Tennessee that's beating down their door right now," Shurburtt said. "Evan's talking about a lot of schools that really don't have them on their board right now. When you consider that, all signs do point to Tennessee."

Shurburtt said Vols fans shouldn't "worry" about the Berry twins.

"It's going to depend on numbers whether they gray-shirt or they don't. They're legacies, and the Vols have offers on the table. (UT) is where they're going, if there's an opportunity," Shurburtt said. "I would not ever worry about the Berry twins if I were a Tennessee fan, regardless of what happens. It's going to be a wait-and-see situation, not so much because of their decision, but because of Tennessee's numbers."

-JC Schurburtt

Assuming Jackson is processed and another commit leaves/gets processed, Berry twins sign and gray-shirt and they add 4 more that would give them 32 signees with one more spot if Dews or Paulk is grayshirted.

Are they legit players? Do UT fans expect them to ever start?

Evan will be a very good college player imo. Extremely fast. He will contribute at Tennessee whether he plays slot or corner. Could be a starter and very good player down the line.

Elliot has no position and is not that good tbh.

I think Evan's recruitment has been slowed down significantly by the need to take Elliot too.

Berry twins should not be treated like that, they're part of UT family.

They're both track stars and Evan is legit. I don't care if they don't pan out. UT needs to take them.

Disagree. You don't give a scholarship to a player just because of family connections - especially if he's never expected to find a position where he could start.

Evan is consensus 4* on all services. Elliot is 3* but you never know whether they'll be good or not.

I agree 100% that they should have spots in the class if they want them.

But they have not handled this process perfectly if we're being honest. Would have been much easier on everybody if they had committed when the other mid-level legacies like Creamer and Wharton did.

A lot of elite players in play for Tennessee and having to save a spot for a low 3 star like Elliot puts Butch in a tough spot.

In the end I think Butch will do the right thing and make room for both of them in the fall.

In a vacuum I'd say sure, take them, even if one is mediocre. But if you've got better players that want in a grey shirt offer is not a bad thing. Especially when they have an older brother who would probably have no problem footing the bill.

What are your thoughts on the Berrys possibly greyshirting?

Personally, I think they silently committed a long time ago and Butch will let it be official when he thinks the time is right.

That may be so for the time being. But at least everyone in the SEC agrees he's better than 2Bz.

They have Berry blood, and they're fast. I don't care what they look like as recruits, they will be good.

I honestly don't belive that Butch Jones will accomplish half the amount that Houston Nutt did at Arkansas and Ole Miss.
