I read where they have made something like 490 offers so far this year. It has been pretty much the same in previous years. Nothing wrong with that, I guess, but it's a far cry from the "pick and choose" schools. Here are some examples from other schools.

Clemson- (70) that's unimaginable

Stanford- (70) I can understand that

Washington (100) That seems low for a top 20 team

Ohio State- 154

Alabama- 186

Georgia- 222

Most of the SEC was in the mid to upper 200's, even LSU.

Sorry I can't list a link to this right now, but I read this article on Tigernet.com (Clemson's website) and then followed it up by googling the subject matter. It's pretty accurate.

That's their thing. It's something they can show the guys that says hey look, we only want you. It's working for them. Alabama, UGA, UT and LSU go the more traditional route and make roster decisions as commits come in. No offer is really committable until they are on campus though.

It’s the same philosophy that James Franklin has at Vandy. Flood the market and say “hey, we were there first”. Collins at Tech and Kiffin are both doing the same stuff. If it works then keep doing it.

Tennessee actually has a philosophy within the program that they try to be the first SEC offer for any "MAC 12" player. Any player that has offers from every MAC school and 5/10 Big 12 schools gets a Tennessee offer. Obviously that is a ploy to be first on the scene for guys that blow up later and almost none of those offers are committable.

You remember when your coach came on himself when that 3 star from Texas committed?

Justin Fields went to UTenn during his early Junior year to campus and the staff totally ignored him. At the time he was about 6’0” and 190lbs.

Not really relevant but just thought I would share.

He was already a high 4* at the time and the story goes that Lyle didn’t even recognize him lmfbo. Field’s dad apparently was pushing for him to go to VOLS for a while before that little mishap.

This was after allegedly pursuing Emory Jones over Trevor Lawrence (although I’m inclined to believe Trevor told Lyle to frick off after meeting him).

Yeah that story came to me one person removed from Pablo. Vols really dropped the ball on that one. Of course that was Butch.

Have to think it wouldn’t have mattered in the end after Lyle put together the worst season in our history but it’s just one of a long list of recruiting mishaps from that staff.

My personal favorite is Tommy Thigpen calling Van Jefferson’s mom a cvnt, leading to him going to Ole Miss.

To be fair tho, they have a lot of ground to make up for when it comes to being a contender in the east.

Never use this atrocity again. If you don’t wanna use UT for whatever reason, then it’s UTK.

2:

That’s lyle fricking jones for ya
