But comparing Sherman to Strong? Really?
You are right, its an unfair comparison. Sherman has a MUCH stronger track record of finding underrated NFL-level talent than Strong.

I would agree. But Sherman's record as a head coach essentially sucked. Outside of Aggies, I doubt you'd find anyone who thinks that Sherman is on the same level as Strong when it comes to being a head coach. I'm guessing that even you have to agree with me on that.

You can't really compare the two since Strong has yet to coach a game in a major conference

Good god this thread is a trainwreck. I'll sum the entire situation up right now.
Current recruiting advantage: A&M
Current perception: A&M on the rise/the hot team in the state, despite setbacks (namely the defense) this season; UT picking up the pieces Mack scattered to the four corners of the earth
2015 recruiting so far: A&M in on all the top defensive players and RBs in Texas, throwing out offers to and gaining interest from top players around the country; UT trying to establish connections across the state and evaluate players, offering players across the country they know about already. Also culling the herd of bad evals from previous staff (Aaron Garza...).
When you can expect a more definitive look at the where each program stands: When the fricking season starts. Lots of questions for both programs. Who'll be the quarterback for each team? Will either defense be any better? Can the Aggies avoid a potential slide back into mediocrity? Can Strong pull a quick turnaround, a la Gus this season? Time will tell and the state of recruiting between these two programs won't change much from now until then.

I'm not going to reiterate 7 pages of testimony here, but I will say that the bottom line is that both teams simply need to win to get where they want to be. Sumlin needs to show he can establish staying power in the SEC west and prove we have what's required to be a dominant force as a national program without the contributions of the greatest of all time in Johnny Football as well as a suspect defense.
All signs point that there's nowhere to go but up since he has stepped foot on campus. Nobody saw 2012 coming, and even with the defense we had last season we were a touchdown or less away from being 11-1. He's brought players in through solid recruiting, holding the #6 class this year and as of now the #1 class for 2015. People are buying what he's selling and its contagious through success, so I don't see anything slowing that down
Strong on the other side is really behind the 8-ball and its too bad because he is a decent coach but he's inheriting a mess of epic proportions. He's a rebound lay after a nasty divorce and he's going to be kicked to the curb if they hover around that 6-8 win mark. There's talent on the roster but he has some serious holes at QB and their defensive front 7 which doesn't translate well towards instant success. Baylor, both Oklahoma teams, and Texas tech are just simply better and in terms of recruiting, all he has is history on his side. He's not even a Texas guy, but a SEC/Florida guy. Forging relationships and getting the gist on texas high school football sets him back simply because Sumlin has been a tremendous recruiter in the state for years even before A&M, all the coaches know Bob Stoops, Mike Gundy, and Les Miles on first name basis. And not to leave out Art Briles--Mr. Texas high school coach himself.
If he digs UT out of this hole this season, I'd be very very impressed but I don't see it happening, no sir.

A&M went 9-4 and UT went 8-5. They aren't that different right now.
Manziel did more for A&M recruiting than many give credit. Kids want press, and Manziel showed everybody that an A&M player can get the press and attention wanted by kids. He added flash to a program needing a face. Manziel did for A&M what Herschel Walker did for Georgia.

No doubt. Our program has underachieved in so many ways since the days of RC Slocum, going into the SEC people really rubbed our nose in shite labelling us instant doormats in an unforgiving league. Truth is though, we've always had good football talent despite what our records indicated in the big-12 over the years, we just never had the right guy to spin it all together. Sumlin changed the culture literally overnight, and Manziel basically led the charge towards getting to where we're capable of being as a football program. But Sumlin and Kliff Kingsbury should get a lot of credit for JFF because if we still had Mike Sherman and his pro style offense, I really don't see Manziel being the dominant player that he was. He'd have good numbers but would've been coached differently and harnessed a little more making him background noise more than anything.
