The 44 man NFL Pro Bowl roster was announced a few days ago.
Of the 44 Pro Bowl players, 37 were THREE star high school players or less.
Twelve of the players on the Pro Bowl roster were Unranked coming out of high school.
Edit: The above info is misleading, according another poster who stated the following:

Sounds great, but NOT TRUE!
35 of the 80 players named to the Pro Bowl (43.8 percent) were rated as either 5-star or 4-star players coming out of high school per the 247Sports Composite, which is an incredibly high hit percentage considering the aforementioned limited number of players that receive such distinctions.
So if 4 and 5 stars are making up 44% of the probowl but only 11% of the recruiting class, seems to me that this is very strong evidence in favor of the star system!

That's not really that interesting when you consider how many more three stars there are.

Thanks for the post. Now I can take comfort in the fact that we never compete for a National Championship with our 3* players but at least they'll go to the Pro Bowl eventually.

Exactly. If you look at the percentage of 5 stars and 4 stars that make it to the nfl it makes these analyst look brilliant.

Some of those unranked players were around before recruiting sites really started to get going. Not many but a few anyways.

Yeah, as others have stated this isn't really all that surprising because there are a lot more 3 stars than 4 and 5 stars. When you look at the 80 man pro bowl roster, 44% are 4 and 5 stars which is a huge percentage relative to the volume of 3 stars and less. LINK I have a hard time believing the 37 out of 44 is accurate based on the 80 man but I don't feel like looking up the starters right now.

Much of it is about longevity. 5-stars have been playing almost every down for 8 years before they even got to the league. Just look at these Bama running backs.

Yep. Even if the 37 3-stars is legit, it's 37 out of 80 (not 44). I edited OP accordingly.

I would like to see the stats for perennial pro bowlers. Filter it by players with 3-5 appearances or more

There are what, ~1000 3 stars and ~30 5 stars annually?
247 composite goes back to the 2000 class using rivals/ESPN/scout data, so there are ~17k 3 stars and ~500 5 stars total in the recruiting star ranking history.
There are 1,664 active NFL players on rosters right now. If every player ever given a 5 star was in the league right now they would only comprise 1/3 of the league. There are enough 3 stars in college right now (~4000+) to supply over 2 professional leagues of 32 52 man rosters
Yes around 100 5 star and 4000 3 star players would still be playing college ball, just some interesting number crunching/way to look at it IMO
