Of course not. Other things are at play, but the recruiting rankings are far more accurate than you are willing to admit.

I admit they are more accurate than they used to be, by far. But I qualified that by typing that it's not an exact science and none of the recruiting services even have a former NFL or college coach on their staffs these days. At least we had Mike Shanahan - and he could party with the best of us in Vegas. He is good friends with Lou Holtz too ... and loved Lou's RC, who is still a friend of mine.

The rankings are fun though.

There will always be exceptions to the rule, but 5 stars generally outperform 4 stars who outperform 3 stars who outperform walk on.

Bobby Burton

Is so full of shite.

He’s on Austin sports radio all the time. Lemme tell ya, if you heard him actually talk about this stuff regularly your faith in the ‘crootin rankings would be severely shaken. He’s not at all impressive and seems to basically be a bloviator.

Hearing him go on and on about Bobby Brown last year and how the guy was the second coming and was for sure going to Texas only for him to go to A&M and for Burton to quickly forget that he even existed was hysterical.

They have had 3 good seasons and 3 bad seasons in the Big 12.

And that’s because of poor recruiting but great coaching. They make chicken shite into chicken salad there but can only pull it off when they are heavy with upperclassmen who’ve been coached-up. When they’re underclassmen-heavy they straight up suck because coaching and time in the program hasn’t been able to make a difference yet. I know some TCU fans and they’re well aware of this and are totally patient during the down years. I give them credit for that.

ESPN is not that great when it comes to recruiting. Not saying any of them are and like others have posted many kids ratings change once specific coaches offer them. Lets be honest anyone at a recruiting service that could truly identify top talent day in and out would be on a college staff not at some service. They guess and then change if the offers do not match their ratings.

They is also bias built in. For example ESPN will have certain kids ranked higher if they commit to the UA AA game. Rivals used to do the same(may still do) with kids that committed to the Army AA game. They also will rate players higher I notice if a certain towards certain schools if their fans are willing to pay for the info. Lets not forget they are a business and are going to cater to whoever is willing to pay. I am not saying UGA commits or targets do not deserve to be rated high but their fans are excited for the direction of the program and if a site seems to be pumping sunshine towards a fanbase and the fans willing to pay for info the sites will accommodate.

Its a business and nothing more. The only people I care for to rate a player is our staff in the end.

And in regards to Tom Luginbil is has to be the worst of the bunch. Every time I listen to him he has no clue. The other day on the radio someone was talking about a player and mentioned the kid was from originally from Wisconsin and Tom was yeah I remember that then someone corrected him that he was not. He did the same last year talking about N Harris and said Alabama would have a fight all the way to NSD for him but yet he was an EE and already signed. He got mad when called out on twitter for the mistake which happens a lot because he has no clue but yet the man for ESPN recruiting services.

One issue that I do have is the broadness of the star system.

Not all 4 stars are the same. A lot of high 4 stars are a lot closet to 5 stars than they are to other 4 stars.

The star system lumps too many together. In generalities, it is like saying a kid who scores a 91 on a test is the same as the kid who scores a 100. And generalities push that 91 significantly higher than the 89.4.

I agree the rating does not always seem on par with the star(s) assigned to them.

IIRC 247 goal was to give 32 5 stars as to mirror the NFL draft. They would pick 32 players they felt were the most likely to get drafted in the first round. I am curious how those rankings have worked out over the years. O know they would not get them all but I wonder if more then 50%.

Well, if you'll read the entire thread this is what I've been saying almost the entire time and even noted his outrageous bias towards Texas.

I know Bobby personally, worked with him, and called him out on it many times face to face.

But this is what ails the entire recruiting ranking process, the entire model, is spoiled for reasons I've noted many times in this thread.

Under 50%. But they play the odds.

A lot of QBS and runningbacks get 5 stars. Moreso than the nfl draft selects in a single first round.

"here are a few observations stemming each recruiting classification in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Five-Star

Of the 31 former five-star prospects eligible to be picked this year, 23 were selected during the draft. (We break down some of the misses here). What’s particularly impressive about that group, though, is just how many of those formerly elite recruits were selected near the top.

Seventeen of the 23 five-star prospects drafted were picked in the first two rounds, including a record-setting 10 in the first.

Of the four five-star prospects selected in the fourth round or later, three (Carl Lawson, Leon McQuay III and Josh Harvey-Clemons) fought serious injuries in their career.
