Or get banned like this and this
I'm a big fan of treating recruits decently, but reading the comments of the high school coaches involved there, it sounds very much like the bitchiest cryfests ever. You can just imagine the player running up to the coach, bawling his eyes out while snot runs freely from his nose, and the coach screaming in fury and swearing vengeance at the program that dared hurt his precious little angel's feelings. I get that the universities could have handled the situations better, but none of the stuff being described even remotely approached deliberate cruelty.
Actually, it sounds a helluva lot like a power trip for these HS coaches. The situations described, while regrettable, were by no means impossible to work out in sincere discussion. Instead, the coaches seem quite frank about the fact that they never had any intention of doing anything except flexing their muscle and punishing major D1 programs regardless of how the programs tried to fix the problems (which were, in the grand scheme of things, relatively minor ones.) It just oozes 'petty power trip.'

Saban is doing it to make himself look good and build favor at a football factory in GA, however the kid is still getting a free ride to school so it's a win-win.
I don't think saban is some saint for doing it but it is a very shrewd move on his part for sure.

I said the same thing in a thread on the Bama board. It's a nice gesture but it's not as if CNS or Bama is sacrificing anything by doing this and we get a lot of good PR and an in at Tucker HS in exchange.

Exactly. He didn't count against the 25, he won't count against the 85, and oh, this is the story out there now, not the fact that Pettway is safely back within the Bama fold while a few others won't be feeling quite so welcome come this Spring.
UGA and plenty of other schools do this kind of thing all the time, even when these guys sign a LOI and count against the 25 and occasionally the 85 if it wasn't a definite career-ending injury.
This was just a smooth PR move on Bama's and Saban's part.

He will work for the team though.
Glad to hear. I was hoping he would accept a role as a student assistant.
