I was reading another board and saw discussion of a player who was going to sign early but not announce it for a couple more weeks. I'd have thought there would a rule that schools had to disclose all signees promptly. Are "silent" signees allowed?

Unless something has changed, the school doesn't have to report anything to the public.

Yes, but to do it is useless.
Guess that's why it's allowed lol

Well, conceivably a coach could ask one of his signees to remain silent and allow a rival program to waste time and energy recruiting him until Febuary.

It would be irritating and potentially damaging to go all the way to Febuary thinking you had a shot with some player, only to learn that they were already signed.

Valid and it happens.
Signed means signed though and it's hard to keep a secret. Somebody pull that off, then they need a better recruiting strategy imo. Up until ESP it will undoubtedly still happen, but I'd think unwise to risk character when it's all public record (besides a few schools).

Eta-it would come out that the player misled another team.

I agree that it would be a sign of poor character, by the coach and the player. I just wondered because there were "insiders" on a non-SEC forum who seemed pretty confident that they had signed a player but it wouldn't be announced for two more weeks. Even a period that long (and during the "non-contact" period) borders on dirty recruiting IMO.

There would be trouble somewhere down the line. I don't know if it would get the student in trouble but a college cannot recruit a player that has signed with another college. It is a recruiting violation.

Here's what it says on the NCAA site.

quote:

Signing a National Letter of Intent ends the recruiting process because participating schools are prohibited from recruiting student-athletes who have already signed letters with other participating schools.

I would think that the NCAA would require that the student would let another school know that he has already signed. If not, then other schools could get their rivals in trouble all the time, by keeping it secret when a recruit signs with them.
