I realize the circumstances and that we're essentially getting your leftovers (and as far a defensive players go I'm fine with that) but what kind of player are we getting in Philon?

Thanks and congrats on another stellar class.

He's a big, raw, athletic defensive lineman. What you do with him from here will determine if he is the next Nick Fairley or some fat guy on the bench. Any time you can sign a big d-lineman, you have done something good. They are hard to find and the big programs usually stockpile them.

nicknamed "Duke"

BIG time hitter, very raw

played mostly inside, some outside in a 3 man front, has a nice lean & explosion, gained a lot of strength & put on muscle this year, up to about 6'3 285, really has good technique with shedding blocks, needs to get better tackling (most DL out of HS do though)has great footwork, more of a patient DL rather than overplaying trying to get to a QB, REALLY good against the run & wading through blockers & delivering a big hit, great athleticism, just very raw

REALLY wanted out of the area of AL he was in, sad but I understand, gonna be a great player for the hogs

Here is a nice youtube vid - LINK

I dunno man...what's worse, the act or the reaction to it. Let's see...Saban lectures the world on the concept of commitment...offers kid a scholarship...kid sticks with Bama all along. Saban pulls scholarship from him, saying that "we can only sign 25, you were the 26th", even though that made no sense at all considering how long ago the kid committed...Saban goes on to sign 3 more players...and made additional room by pulling a scholarship from a kid that he had convinced to reneg on another committment...at the last minute. Philon now scrambling wondering what to do after being embarassed on tv. Seriously? Saban is a hell of a football coach...from recruiting, to hands on coaching, to x's and o's, to motivating...TOP NOTCH, I don't know if there has ever been better. But he is the scum of the Earth. I don't know how I would feel if I were in your shoes...I can sit here all high and mighty and pretend like I know I wouldn't stand for it...but I guess you don't know until you are there. The guy keeps winning.

Good player, every 'Bama fan was excited when he committed. I think he can be a badass DL. Mind you that most of 'Bamas DLs aren't as highly ranked as other positions.

Dareus/Chapman/Cody/Gentry/Deaderick/Square were all 3 star DLs that turned out to be absolute beasts for the most part.

I think he can make just a big of impact on your team as Trey Flowers. But that is my opinion

I would much rather have Philon over Tomlinson and Kirven FWIW. Go look at all 3 of their film. Philon is a mean son of a bitch on the field. I thought he was our most underrated commitment. I hate that he is going to Arkansas.

thanks for the info.

like i said if the guy is good enough for Saban at least offer he's certainly good enough for me, and you can never have enough big D-linemen.

that was a convenient little detail that came out on message boards today and now is being repeated as fact. Only problem is, it doesn't jive with Philon's announcement and reaction AT ALL. If he was notified weeks ago, he wasn't notified until today that he had been notified. Even if he was (he wasn't), that's still ok? "we're committed to you until we find someone better"? Of course...there is the irony that it's exactly what he did to Auburn but he's a friggin teenager...I get it. Grown men shouldn't be doing that

Why would he have a TV signing ceremony if he was told weeks ago he would be greyshirting? The pieces dont fit into the story.

Arky fans- Saban did not really want Philon as much as he want to keep him from Auburn. He has done this many times, last one was Petey Smith.
