Saban may have obtained a slight upgrade at DT but it comes at a high PR cost that will likely be used by every team in the SEC.
Dude, somebody does this shite every year. It's over. It happened. DWI.

How would you feel about your university if Philon's dad or coach held a press conference to address Nick Saban's recruiting ethics?
Fine. But then, I'm an adult and know that he's doing his job. And sometimes that job entails having a contingency plan in case a player bolts on signing day. In this instance, one didn't and he took who he felt was the better of the two and asked the other to still come, just a few months down the road. The horror of it. To ask a student to wait a few months in exchange for tens of thousands of dollars of free education.

This wasn't done to protect against a player bolting, this was done to obtain a perceived upgrade at defensive tackle. I appreciate the tremendous job CNS has done improving our recruiting, but I don't think this decision has significantly improved the class and I think the negative PR implications will greatly outweigh whatever marginal benefit is obtained.
If the staff was concerned about the impact of his injury or recovery this should have been addressed at that time. The same result could have been obtained, with far fewer negative PR consequences, if the staff had addressed this months ago rather than a week or two before signing day. This situation was mismanaged by the staff, and was easily avoidable. Philon should not have been put in this position, which is entirely the result of how our staff handled his recruitment. If a player is injured, certainly the staff has a right to alter the terms of his offer, but that should be done as soon as the extent of the injury is known.
I think Saban is unfairly criticized for oversigning and processing players, but situations like this and Justin Taylor only fuel that perception and were completely avoidable. Why give ammunition to your critics?

My point is that both the Philon situation and the Justin Taylor situation could have and should have been avoided. If a commit is injured after his offer then the school has a right to alter the terms of that offer. If Alabama had told Philon and Taylor months ago, after the extent of their injuries were known, that they were being extended grayshirt offers, no one could criticize Bama.
But when you don't alter the terms of their offers and you continue to recruit their positions until you are in an oversigned position, you deserve whatever blowback you get when you change their offers close to NSD.
I think CNS has maximized the class ranking, but has sacrificed the PR high ground in doing so. He could have had it both ways, if he had handled the situation more proactively. If you don't get better recruits, you can upgrade the grayshirt to a full ride redshirt. You lose the PR battle if you try to go the other way, removing the full ride for the last minute grayshirt.
