Then calling them AU is correct. The name of the school in Austin is The University of Texas at Austin, whether Aggies like it or not. TU is not correct and t.u. is gay.

I think your missing my point. I know what the correct name of the school is, and I call them such.

Then I'm not missing your point, the name of UT is just that, if Auburn players are calling it The University of Auburn, that's not the same. The Auburn players are the one's getting it wrong.

Compare what Texas did in the 50s to what ULL has been trying to do since the 80s which is become University of Louisiana. Even now people still call them USL as a jab. If they were a major rival to LSU, LSU fans would undoubtably still call them USL.

I'd need confirmation about the name change in the 50's because I've heard it goes to the late 19th century from old Aggies.

Officially ULL is the name, if they want to be UL, whatever, I'd still call them the University of Slow Learners or ULL, not UL.

I don't think Texas A&M was Texas Ag and Mech College until the 60's or so when it became Texas A&M University. Should Texas fans call them TAMC instead of TAMU?

apparently not, I've spent a total of maybe a week in the state of Alabama in my life, so I wouldn't get any local jokes, unless you were referencing Virgina Tech

Actually, they were. Before 1963, it was the A&M College of Texas. (TAMC) In 1963, the name was officially changed to Texas A&M University. The A and the M were retained as a throwback to the history and don't technically stand for anything anymore.

Auburn University used to be Alabama Polytechnic Institute from 1899-1960. It has always been colloquially knows as Auburn, but official in 1960. We still have shirts and sweatshirts sold on campus that say API.

Yeah that's the point. Whenever the name changed, Texas was trying to rebrand itself as "the University of Texas" similarly to what USL is trying to do.

A&M still has yells that use TAMC as the name. It's also a different situation because they weren't trying to rebrand themselves as "the" university of anything.

I'm not saying it's the greatest "tradition" but it does go back to a decade old jab for changing their name.

I've heard a different story from an old school aggie that played for Bear Bryant, it goes back further than the 50's, I'm pretty sure the school in Austin was always the University of Texas and Aggies don't like it because A&M was founded first.

You nailed it. Who are you going to believe, an Aggie or the Texas Historical Commission.

quote:

The Constitution of 1876 specified that the legislature, as soon as practicable, was to establish, organize, and provide for the maintenance and support of a "university of the first class" to be located by vote of the people and styled the University of Texas, for promotion of the study of literature and the arts and sciences.

Ags, just let it go and you'll be far happier. Will you be "sawing off varsity's horns" 5 years from now when you're playing Auburn or Ole Miss? My guess is that you will.

Will you still be posting here 5 years from now, looking like an obsessed bitch that just wants its Aggy back? My guess it that you will.

If anyone thinks the power in the state of Texas is even close to shifting they are a moron. It is like the Auburn fans who thought the same thing after bam a decided to be screw ups in the post stallings pre Saban era.

Even if Auburn or TAMU were to run of strings of BCSNCs The power is still in the hands of Texas or Bama in their states. We are just going to have to deal with it.

Please hire another Schula Bama.

This. There's plenty of talent in the respective regions that both Auburn and A&M recruit in to still stockpile the type of players needed to win though. Taking Texas recruits from schools like OU and LSU is a more reasonable goal and will still help us a ton.

There are enough kids from Texas that if TAMU was able to just win the left over scraps from UT Austin over OU,LSU, Arky and all the other schools and have some solid coaching they could be a top team in the country.

Auburn essentially has no base recruiting ground because even players that grow up AU fans have local pressure (Yeldon and soon to be Liner). We recruit like UTenn about a decade ago, pick up a handful of quality in state kids then steal kids from neighboring states

They were supposed to be top 10 this year and went 6-6 in the Big 12. They might go 4-8 in the SEC.
