We're not getting Campbell, but us taking Brandon Davis has nothing to do with it. It'll be interesting to see if he actually gets a football scholarship or if he is PWO.

quote:

spoke to Davis earlier today following his unofficial visit to Tennessee over the weekend. The situation is still fluid, but as I said last night, Davis is an intriguing prospect but nothing more right now. He has no bearing on Tennessee's cornerback board, as Griffin, Smith, Palmer and ITS are all still top targets.

Davis is a two-sport star (shortstop and corner) and spent the weekend meeting with baseball coach Tony Vitello, as well as Jeremy Pruitt, Terry Fair and David Johnson.”

He certainly looks more like a PWO than a sec scholarship corner but never know some coaches see things in kids that others don't

John Curtis has a really good baseball program. Would be huge if y'all got him as a PWO. Plus it's a can't lose situation for him. If he's drafted high he can take the baseball route while having leverage Or he can go to TN and play football and baseball and get a education

Gotta admit if I have 5 visits and I am just taking them to see the world, I am going to U of Hawaii, UCLA, U of Oregon, Notre dame (just for the history of it), and U of Colorado, maybe?

Do some sightseeing, scenic beauty and history with those. Knoxville? No.

They made a rule that you couldn’t just use and official to Hawaii because it costs so much to fly kids out there. Not sure what the stipulations are and am too lazy to look it up right now, but that seems to be off the table

Not sure there is anything official that prevents it actually, just that Hawaii started to be more selective (the new staff is relaxing that approach a bit):

Stanford limits OVs to only athletes that qualify for admission. I'm sure there are other schools that have to be careful/selective as well.

I’m thinking I heard somewhere that an athlete has to have a committable offer before an OV is allowed? Could be wrong.

Pruitt has the ability to find prospects from the scrapheap and make them SEC caliber DBs.

Deandre Baker 247 657th ranked, Aaron Davis virtually unranked, and Dom Sanders 247 822nd ranked.

Baker was a Army AllAmerican. I think recruiting services missed on this one badly.

This makes me feel much better about some of these "who?" recruits. He did also find Jordan Young, who went from unranked with zero FBS offers to 4* (Simmons says if he had gone to camps and if they had known about him earlier, he likely would have been a 5* top 3 WR).

Also turned an Alabama walk on into an All-SEC caliber DB.

I guess I'm just jaded about diamonds in the rough after Lyle's snake oil 5* heart bullshite.

The moment he starts playing football he will count against the 85 rule though.

Can he be a blue shirt? Here's what concerns me, if he signs next week, then gets drafted by the MLB, do we lose that scholarship?

If he signs he still counts against the yearly 25 limit.

If he goes MLB, never counts against total 85 limit, but the yearly 25 spot is gone. Biggest effect is you can't back count that spot next year.

Haven't ever heard it being any sort of rule defining it. It's not like kids get to say "I'm taking an OV to [fill in the blank]". Hawaii would have to approve the kid for the OV, and that's where the selective component comes in. If you're managing Hawaii's recruiting budget, you're not going to just let every kid that wants to take a free trip come visit... you have to feel like you have a legitimate chance of winning them over.

Example for UGA: Wildgoose took his OV, even though we all pretty much knew his offer (and commitment) were no longer commitable. Still hate to lose him, I think he'll be good, just a bit of a project early on that we don't have the room for.

This. If he's coming as a PWO, then he wouldn't be a "signee" so not counting against the 25, but if he signs an LOI, regardless of whether he comes or not, he's counting against the 25... that was the big change this year from years prior... before, you used to get that spot back. Fail to qualify, MLB draft, etc... you used to see schools backfill with late qualifiers and/or JUCOs that didn't get picked up on the first run through... still not certain I understand who that rule change was intended to impact... if anything it seems to be bad for the student athletes that are borderline and gives schools more options to slowplay kids throughout the process?

Yep. Current shutdown corner and one more season of improvement away from being a potential first round pick.

As long as he doesn't sign until after we know if he's going to MLB, we're ok?
