2021 class QB dominoes are falling fast, earlier than ever (247Sports)
quote:

The pursuit of top quarterbacks presents some of the most unique challenges for college football staffs on the recruiting trail. The recruitment of the position is both highly nuanced and delicate from a strategic and philosophical standpoint. No position does more to determine a program and coaching staff’s trajectory and success.

Quarterback recruiting has been dubbed “a different animal” for years. Most programs only take one signal caller and the limited spots creates a first come, first serve situation, which typically accelerates a quarterback’s decision-making process. The nature of national quarterback recruiting often leads to a fascinating domino effect, with top programs and signal callers playing a game of musical chairs, jockeying for desired fits–on both ends.

In the past, the quarterback domino storyline has played out in the early- to mid-spring prior the prospects’ senior seasons. Interestingly, we’ve seen this timeline skip an entire calendar year for many of the top underclassmen quarterbacks. Eleven of the top 21 quarterbacks in the 2021 cycle are already committed, prior to taking a snap as a junior. That number nearly doubles the total of top committed quarterbacks from the 2020 cycle at this point last year. This could be in part to the 2021 cycle’s relative depth at the position compared to recent classes. By comparison, several of the Top247's top 2020 quarterbacks were first-year starters as juniors.

Quarterback recruiting is already high-risk, given the importance of the position and its developmental nature. A bad evaluation or two can directly impact wins and losses for years. It’s difficult enough to project a quarterback as a rising senior. With college programs now being heavily incentivized to land a QB prior to their junior season, look for an even higher variance in results due to the decreasing amount of exposure and body of work to evaluate.

Whether this is a one-off or an emerging trend, remains to be seen. Regardless, it has created a unique and fascinating situation that will be fun to track over the next several years.

Here’s a rundown of the major 2021 quarterback dominoes to date . . .

Change to policy on juniors taking OVs and the evolution of committed QBs as "pied piper" type recruiters for their programs...

UGA theoretically getting good news from Caleb Williams at the end of the month.

Yeah, it looks like he's heavily leaning your way and a great get. I'm very pleased with Bama landing Drake Maye and getting it done early.

Isn't Bama trying to grab 2 QBs this class.

Bama has 2020 QB/ATH commit Kristian Story. Bryce Young is their only other 2020 QB target. Whether they seek a 2nd 2021 QB is still TBD.

Caleb Williams is looking like a must sign for UGA. I'm not sure what Beck will bring to the table, and 21' is obviously the year for QBs. Not signing on of the first class kids is falling behind.

The kid's sophomore tape looks a lot like Aaron Murray with a bit more athleticism. He's going to be really good.

You honestly don’t know what Beck brings to the table?

When that kid came to our camp he was easily the best QB there with a handful of other 4 stars from even 2020 class there. Wish we could get more interest out of him, but looks like we are headed more into Garrett Nussmeier or maybe Behren Morton.

Beck could be really good but his accuracy numbers aren't great. It's not like he is a 5* can't miss guy. Believe he is ranked outside the top 100 also.

Dual Threat UGA QB experiment, "Take 2" - hopefully this one comes to fruition.

None of that has to do with what he brings to the table

Edit: btw, his accuracy was better than Williams last year.

MSU does not have a Qb committed for 2021. They are recruiting Ty Keyes and Starkville Highs Luke Altmyer.

Thanks. I misread the QB rankings list that had MSU's logo by itself on Keyes, showing MSU has 100% of his crystal ball picks. I'll fix my post.

Nobody knows what he brings to the table. That's not saying he's a bad player - just not as much of a sure thing as some others.

Sorry, but when you say this it tells me you don't know what his intangibles are.

Good size. He's pretty accurate and he's a winner playing big-time ball in FL.

Facing the best cover guys in the nation, however, he's been outperformed by the other elite QB's and he also didn't didn't test particularly well.

He's a good player for sure, but he's no sure thing.
Hence, why you or I don't know what he'll bring to the table.

I hope you understand what that means now so next time you can calm the urge to do the cliched contrarian a-hole thing.

Simmer down, Francis. All I did was ask you a question because I thought you didn't know much about Beck. No need to get your panties in a wad.

I have no dawg in this fight, but it seems to me there wouldn't be a fight if you had said "I'm not sure how Beck will pan out" instead of saying
"I'm not sure what Beck will bring to the table."

Generally speaking, it's more difficult to project how QBs will pan out at the next level (both college and pro) than it is for other positions, which is a point of emphasis in the OP article. Perhaps that was your intended point.
