Alabama tapped into the state of Georgia for its latest commit in Rashad Cheney.

The four-star defensive tackle from Ellenwood (Ga.) Cedar Grove announced his commitment to the Crimson Tide on Thursday afternoon over schools like Florida, Georgia Tech, and Penn State, among others.

Coach Kuligowski apparently loves this kid’s potential.

Yep. Wanted him badly at Miami and now at Bama. Very high on Bama's board since Coach Kul got there.

What a weird recruitment so far. Commits to UGA, but there is a mutual split. Cheney likes Auburn, but they stop communicating, thus SCAR looks to be the favorite. Then boom, he commits to Bama. It’s only April.

He visited Alabama last weekend. So it wasn’t completly out of nowhere. He had a previous relationship with Kuligowski when he was still at Miami.

He’s just not your typical Saban D-lineman. Cheney has short arms, is smaller in stature and rumor is he takes plays off. I’m more curious, considering the enormous success of Saban, what is UGA and Auburn missing? Again, this guy could turn out to be another Bama 1rd pick, it’s just a weird recruitment. I hope I didn’t come off as knocking the guy, I’m just accustomed to Bama getting the pick of the litter.

I'm also curious. He's too highly rated to call him a project, but not what some consider a can't miss.

He may be a great one if he stays 4 or 5 years and works hard.

Cheney has short arms
Not a big factor on defense as on offense for a lineman.

rumor is he takes plays off

He has said this himself. He wont win a starting job if he's a slacker.

Byron Cowart was a 5 star can't miss. Nick Fairley was a 3 star. One was not like the other.

What Alabama is getting in new DL commit Rashad Cheney (BamaOnLine)
quote:

Alabama has a major need along the defensive line in its 2019 class, and added a big piece to the puzzle on Thursday afternoon in Rashad Cheney. The four-star defensive tackle becomes the first defensive lineman to join the fold, and the Tide is getting a good one according to Cheney’s head coach at Ellenwood (Ga.) Cedar Grove, Jermaine Smith.

“Great kid,” Smith told BamaOnLine. “He’s hard-working. He’s probably gained fifteen pounds of muscle in the last year. He’s fast off the ball and is aggressive with his hands. The sky’s the limit. He’s getting better and better every day, every practice. He loves football.

"He’s one of those kid’s that’s easy to coach because he loves to compete. He’s one of those guys you kind of have to tell to take some reps off. He’ll try to go on the scout team and take some reps there. He does a good job in the classroom. He’s respectful. He’s one of those guys that’s hard to find.”

Cheney contributes to Cedar Grove in a number of ways, a luxury of having a 275-pound defensive lineman that looks and can move like a 250-pounder. “He had two touchdowns at fullback last year,” Cheney said. “I can use him at offensive tackle if I needed him to. He could be one of the top tackles if I really needed him to, or top guards. On goal line I put him in there and let him knock the hell out of somebody.”

ETA: He's now 6'3"/270-lbs and still growing.

He is decent prospect. We have done good with lineman like him who stay in the program for a while.

Honestly think most of us (UGA fans) are just surprised he ended up at Bama. After decommitting from us it looked like USCe was the destination. The fact that Saban/Kug want him has me concerned we screwed up and missed out on a solid prospect.

Educate me. Bama’s D-Line last year was freakishly big.

You can just about count the elite interior DL Alabama has signed under Nick Saban on one hand. The majority of them have been ranked similar to Cheney, JUCOs, developmental prospects. Elite DTs have never flocked to Tuscaloosa like other positions.

Dalvin Tomlinson was elite, and powered through two knee injuries. One of the most awesome resumes of a DL in the SEC in the past several years. Daron Payne too.

State championship wrestler 3 years in a row (won the championship his senior year under 10 seconds), played on his school's soccer team, was on the chess team in high school, survived family strife losing his mother and had the brains and brawn to understand his position in the game.

One of the most awesome SEC players in the past 10 years. Elite athlete and person, rankings be damned.

He was similarly ranked as Cheney.

Would be among the handful I am talking about, like A’Shawn Robinson (though he was rated as a five star OT).
