I was in Germany then and missed most of that season; but yeah, that's a good contender. Beginning of the end for Dye.

Had to be. Campus was an absolute shite show that week. Whole families living in dorms; MPs all around campus, helicopters landing on the parade grounds, etc. Dont know how anyone could focus during that time.

As much as I think that team had the potential to go undefeated had they beaten UT that Monday, it wouldn't have mattered, as USC-UT would've locked LSU out from the title game anyway.

Also, that was the first in a long line of SEC office F-Us to LSU, as they put a 10-2 Western division champ in the Peach Bowl.

1992 Gamecocks ... started 0-5, finished 5-1 and actually should have beaten Spurrier and the Gators in The Swamp, it was the Gamecocks' only loss in the final six.

The 5-1 run started when a little-known long haired freshman QB from Pennsylvania stepped-in against a ranked Mississippi State team, (at the time), and beat them.

The week before, Alabama and Stallings had just crushed us and I though it was over - but we managed to turn it around thanks to Tanneyhill.

The 90s were rough on the Gamecocks. We had a lot of growing-up to do.

2005 Alabama for worst collapse. 9-0 and #3 in the country. Lost to LSU and got crushed by Auburn to close out the season and finished 3rd in the West.

Recovery- 2014. Lost to Ole Miss followed by a terrible game in Fayetteville seemed like it was over. Next game beat A@M 59-0 and went on to win the SEC

Best turn around was probably last season.

Best recovery for UT was 1988. Started the season 0-6, fired Ken Donahue and hired Doug Matthews as DC during open date (switched from 3-4 to 4-3 during that week) and finished 5-0.

For Mississippi State, its a tie between 1986 and 2012.

In 1986, State started out 6-1 with a win at #8 Tennessee, a win in the Carrier Dome when Syracuse was a force, and a win over Florida. State was top 10 in the country, then lost the last four games of the year and missed out on a bowl.

35-6 to Auburn
38-3 to Alabama
47-0 to LSU
24-3 to Ole Miss

2012 was the #WeBelieve year. 7-0 and #11 in the country before finishing 8-5. I give 1986 the edge because we had beaten some good teams to get to 6-1. The 7-0 start felt dirty.

2001 LSU was a pretty amazing turnaround. Got dumptrucked by Rex Grossman & Co. at home, lost a somewhat close game in Knoxville, and lost to OM in a dumpster fire at home. Went on to win the SEC and killed Illinois in the Sugar Bowl. Saban's best corching job while at LSU IMO. (More importantly, Jimbo's best jerb as OC while at LSU).

The 2002 LSU team folded after db Damien James left and qb Matt Mauck got hurt. They had won the SEC championship the year before and would win the National Championship a year later. They lost four out of six to end the year and only a miracle win over Kentucky prevented it from being worse. It was probably the worst coaching job of Saban's career. That team was LOADED with talent.

Mauck going down killed the season. He was playing like a wildboy that season.

Our worst collapse was going 5 - 0 to start last season and then losing every game from there on out.

I disagree. Last season's "collapse" was more a function of playing better opponents and young skill players getting ground down by an 8 game stretch.

The much worse collapse (although some significant injuries played a part) was in 2007 when UK was 6-1 and ranked in the top 10 after beating #1 LSU and then lost 4 of 5 (including a 17 point loss to Croom's MSU) to finish 7-5 and unranked.
