It might work the first go 'round but fooling SEC coaching staffs two years in a row is another story. AU's offense might not be just a bunch of trick plays but it was alot of "smoke and mirrors" last year. AU tried to out formation, misdirect and hurry up defenses into mistakes in order to move the ball. The question going into this season was did Mahlzahn run this system because the personel was not in place and would he prefer to line up and out play the other side, or is "trickery" all he knows. If it is effective (and at times it was very effective), there is nothing wrong with last years offensive strategy. I personally would rather see my team out execute than decieve. As I said earlier the element of suprise is gone now. Time for Auburn to man up,line up and out execute the other team because people arnt going to be fooled by stuff like an ineligible tackle split out wide, and other such foolery this year.
Most of the offense is not new most of the basic formations and plays have been around for as long as Joe Pop, the difference Gus has is that he runs the QB in the shotgun, he sometimes uses unbalanced lines, and uses a lot of motion to confuse defenses.
last season much of our offense was very predictable due to the fact Todd didn't have a strong arm, we were limited to Adams and sometimes Zach or Carr in making plays at receiver, and Tate. Todd was not a runner and many times didn't run, he shocked LSU for about 8 yards when he took off two times in that game as NO ONE. expected him to run.
Every offense has to execute, Auburn did that a lot last year but also didn't a lot but considering the 1st year under a new coaching staff and offense it wasn't too shabby. You can call an offense "gimmicky" but if they execute and put points on the board they are getting the job done and that's what matters.
Funny I also seem to remember Monte Kiffin saying Gus was among the best offensive minds he's ever seen and that the offense was similar to trying to read a book that was being waved in front of your face.

back in the day of the wishbone and the triple option, they were considered trick plays. There isn't much difference in the deception used by the triple option and what we do, we just spread people out more. Call it what you will, whatever works.

Name a team that has won a national championship based on trick plays. Just one.
Nebraska? Fumblerooski?

There are no "trick" plays...just plays. If you can't stop them then you lose. If Saban is the genius yall think he is the he shouldn't have been "tricked".

Trick plays that beat Bama. I mean who cares what kind of plays they are? If they win you a game then they are effective.
And AU has won a lot of games.

The pass to lutz to take the lead against bama, the ole trick pass to the tight end

FTR, it was a bit of trickeration or gimmick if you want to call it.
We called it "oh shite" when I played. The TE fakes a block, some times falling down, all the while the QB rolls the way then sets up and throws back across the field.
It worked though and that's the only thing that matters right?

On-side kick? Is that a gimmick?
I may be mistaken but after the Iron bowl last year when Auburn pulled out an onside kick on bama didn't bama turn right around and use that same move in the SEC championship or the NC game? It was one of the 2.
