In HS, we (officials ) never start a series in between yard lines … always mark it on a yard line and it makes it easy most of the time . I think we had 3 measurements all year

Yes, but the accuracy of the location of the ball is probably not as precise as needed for this type of measurement, especially without additional sensors in/on the field (unless we're just assuming close is good enough).

There's also the issue of knowing where the ball is throughout a play, but not knowing where exactly it was when the player's knee went down, for example.

Unless the ball is inside the two, first downs and lines to gain are placed on a yardage line. This makes things easier for everyone. Questionable plays get reviewed.
