I'm was just thinking that if people paint over the rock all the time maybe they should have chose a better spot for the memorial.
They sent out a campus wide email saying not to, and the Rock is like Toomers is to AU, so it would be like somebody putting a memorial for 2 AU students that died a week ago and an Alabama fan coming in and writing roll tide over it. It's classless and pretty fricking inhuman

If you put a memorial on something that's meant to be painted over, don't be surprised when some illiterate dumb asses paint over it.

because it was.

The kids attend UT, which means they should have known the protocol.

there was a quote in thread earlier saying the guy who admits to doing it claims he doesnt go to UT. it's been edited out for whatever reason.

He did go, still lives on campus and the guy that helped him does still attend UT.

They rioted in their own town and you expect them to have respect for another school's memorial?
Low class...

Read again. They are former and current UT students that did this.

It's meant to be painted. I would have picked another time to paint over it though.

It stated on the memorial "Please don't paint over until 4/5/12"

It doesn't matter if it normally gets painted regularly this was a unique situation and it said explicitly on the rock not to paint over until a certain date to honor these kids. I won't go as far as some have but it was certainly classless to paint over it before that date
ETA: And it's classless whether a UT, UK, or non student/fan did this, however the way I understood it originally there were no UT students involved only former

I can't imagine a) being a UGA fan and attending a rival school in the first place, b) taking the time out of my day to paint UGA colors on my rival school's landmark, and c) choosing to do so over a person's makeshift memorial.
I get that it's painted over on a weekly basis, but use some common sense here.
What an idiot.

UT fans should be glad that thing is too big to do anything other than paint it. Ever since Howard's Rock was set at Clempson stories have come out about SC fans trying to frick with. I've heard stuff from picking it up and throwing it, to trying to steal it, to pissing on it, etc etc. Again some of these stories are harder to confirm than others but its enough that Clemmons had to put a case around it and have students guard it the entire week before the SC-CU game.
Just a random one I found in an article about Taneyhill and the '92 season.
quote:
In the days leading up to that 1992 game at Death Valley, a few rogue Gamecocks fans broke into the stadium and attempted to steal Howard’s Rock atop the Hill. They were not successful, but they left the exterior of the rock damaged.
?The Tigers were 5-5. They had lost three of the past four games. And the vandalizing of the Rock felt like another defeat.

That kind of stuff I understand. It happens and it's fun but at no point did it mess up a memorial for two dead ppl
