With the Saban LSU quote and the Kniffin-Vols story, today is "what could have been day" on tRant.

Did OP go into hibernation during coaching search 2017?

Most VOLS fans were screaming for Lane to return home

Many know the "Dolphins passed on Brees" angle on Saban, but SI did a whole "What if...?" article on it. An excerpt:

quote:

The year was 2006. Brees, a free agent, met with the Dolphins and the Saints. Miami coach Nick Saban defied the advice of team doctors and convinced the QB to sign with him. Even as the Dolphins went 8–8 in Brees’s first season, Saban knew he had something special brewing—which is why, when somebody asked him that year about the vacant Alabama job, Saban uttered the words that have made him beloved in Miami: “I’m not going to be the Alabama coach.”

A year later Brees’s Dolphins stunned the undefeated Patriots in the playoffs before losing to the Giants in Super Bowl XLII on a crazy catch by David Tyree. Still, football’s greatest rivalry was born: Pats vs. Fins; Belichick vs. Saban, his former pupil; Brady vs. Brees. It’s so weird to think that people used to say Brady’s biggest rival was Peyton Manning.

Miami ended New England’s stranglehold on the AFC East; the two teams have alternated division titles every subsequent year. Conspiracy theorists say the Dolphins’ rise frustrated Belichick and Co. so much that they began looking for any kind of edge, up to and including illegally deflating balls. (Belichick and Brady deny any such accusations.)

Meanwhile, Alabama foolishly believed Saban was bluffing when he said he wasn’t coming. Seriously now, could the man have been any clearer? When Crimson Tide officials made their formal pitch and Saban said no, they turned instead where desperate schools turn: Louisville’s Bobby Petrino.

If Lyle crossed the Knox County line ever again after Cigargate, his severed head would be planted on a spear and displayed adjacent to the Civil War statue on 16th and Clinch for future generations to see

So how long until y'all run Smart off for still not winning anything?

The last 3 coaches combined averaged a 9 year tenure.

'Course, Richt skewed that number because he was here for 15 years, compared to 7 for Goff and 5 for Donnan. So...I figure Kirby has a long leash.

Oh, God, yes. He is the perfect coach for the VOLS. He needs to lose a little weight, though. I'm not taking him back if he is fat.

This is fantastic on so many levels. Upvoted.

Vols have battered wife syndrome when it comes to Kiffin.

What's stranger is that Lane has it too. We weren't exactly nice to him on the way out (many still hate him) and all he's done for the past 10 years is pine for us and ask his buddies if we still hate him (seriously, he asked Ed O. that). He flirts with us incessantly and we flirt back. It's one of the most fricked up relationships ever. Neither side seems to be able to move on.

So, like a booty call? All Tennessee has to do is get a serious case of beer goggles?

Pretty much. He even calls out to us every few months like clockwork saying "hey babe, our time together wasn't so bad was it?"
