Fulmer. He threatened to leave for Vandy if he wasn’t named HC. The timing was very bad. Majors was a good, not great, HC, but he gave his all for Tennessee. He didn’t deserve how it went down.

He got drunk and cursed out several of the wrong people.
Johnny's best friend, who donated enough to have stuff named after him on campus and his name on scholarships, also is the Dad of a good friend of mine. He walked in the house after Johnny's drunken stunt and said, "Johnny just lost his job tonight."
Fulmer did not threaten to leave.. Coaches did not threaten Doug Dickey. Fulmer would have been out on his arse immediately if he threatened Doug.
UT President Joe Johnson had already threatened to fire Majors over his mouth.
It's bad enough these other idiots don't have a clue, but so-called UT fans spewing bullshite.

It takes a real man to spill the truth. Thank you for setting the record straight.

Wasn't Major's drink of choice George Dickle? He always looked great in those tweed jackets. Convenient for hiding a flask. A well dressed coach at least.

Best radio call EVER was after he came back and lost to Arkansas. We were favored and Majors blew the game.
This call made them put a delay on callers from that week forward.
Randy Smith: Okay, you're on the air. What is your question.
Caller: Do you think it would help if Johnny changed brands of liquor?
You could hear one huge laugh from every car lined up waiting to get out.
Randy Smith was all kinds of mad.

somewhat ironic for this stupid thread, when Bobby was fired, and before John L Smith was hired as interim for one season, Fulmer wanted the Arkansas interim job, but he wanted two years, not one
So he stayed home
So he stayed home

Love this old school pic of Coach Majors.
And look who's on the headset...

Respectfully, you have your facts wrong. I was there before and after it went down and knew the people involved. I like Fulmer, personally. He played it well with Shuler and beating UGA on the road against that stacked Bulldogs team. Majors went 5-3 in ‘92 (He did not lose the last 4. He want 3-2).
Last, if you want to talk about backstabbing extraordinaire, look no further than the AD, Doug Dickey. Google how he left UT for Florida, and sued one of his best friends, a big donor, for a slip on a boat. Talk about snakes!

Mrs. Fulmer, PLEASE…. We’re trying to have a civil discussion here about the worst backstabbers. Your husband happens to be the worst. It’s ok.

Your first paragraph is TOTAL bullshite.
Johnny went 2-3 first 5 games back. He lost 3 straight when he first came back. Games we were favored to win. Arkansas, Alabama, and South Carolina. Look it up.
Your second paragraph has merit, but has nothing to do with Majors getting fired. You claimed Fulmer threatened Dickey with leaving. Doug would have fired him on the spot.
My good friend's Dad told me what happened. HE WAS THERE AT THE EVENT. He was Johnny's best friend. Johnny had been warned about his mouth by Joe Johnson. Then he gets drunk at a big Admin/Booster function and showed his arse royally. That sealed his fate that night.
By the way, Doug Dickey was one of the best ADs we ever had. Love him or hate him.
Johnny could have been the AD if he had stayed out of that bottle.
You claim to have been there. I was there too. You obviously have no clue how bad the drinking had gotten.

That must have been at Iowa State.

I always liked Majors. He was the quintessential Tennessee man from a well known Tennessee family. Had some exciting teams. I was at the 1990 Ole Miss game in Memphis when Greg Amsler ran through Ole Miss like a tank in the 2nd half. The '85 Sugar Bowl was one of the greatest games in Vol history. A couple of those guys were on my staff at a company I worked for in the 90's. Loved hearing their stories from that game.

Also a DC on Tennessee's 1990 team. Lots of loyalty with the old guys.

Majors beat Cincinnati and LSU when he came back. Maybe you should look it up.

I loved Johnny, but it got to where he thought he was bigger than the program.
At one meeting about a NCAA infraction problem, Johnny did not like the way it was being handled by the administration.
He spoke up and announced, "the next time this happens, I will just handle it myself."
UT President Joe Johnson shut him down on the spot. "John, the next time this happens, you won't be one of us."
