molsusports - what's telling there though is that schools like Florida State and Virginia Tech would also rank in the bottom half of SEC attendance, in Va Tech's case almost as far toward the bottom as Mizzou.
Attendance-wise other than A&M there just were not many realistic candidates out there that would have beefed up the SEC attendance numbers in any more meaningful way than Mizzou would.
as far as alternatives to Mizzou I don't think there were many better options and its not all about attendance anyway (missouri > west virginia when it comes to money and that's the end of the story for the most part).
Having gone to multiple games at MU I think they are decent fans but still not batshit football crazy like you find in many schools at the SEC. The stadium strikes me as attractive and IMO has room to add organized seating in the North endzone and more luxury box seating on the East side of the stadium.
Arkansas and South Carolina are probably roughly comparable to Missouri (when it comes to football potential) but they both IMO have more of a football culture core to their school's identity. Of all the schools in the SEC South Carolina has probably the weakest overall history in football but their fans are just tremendous, passionate, and make their stadium a great place to visit.

molsusports, yeah those are fair assessments. The obvious counterpoint there and one we struggle with is that South Carolina and Arkansas don't have pro sports in their states and hence college football is THE big ticket attraction. For Mizzou we have quite the opposite problem in that St.Louis has one of the largest and most devoted and far-reaching followings in major league baseball, and the Chiefs over in KC have a long history of a passionate fanbase of their own, so with Mizzou stuck in the middle two hours away from each it has to seemingly do a little more to attract the sporting dollar and time of the non-alums and less religious fans. SEC country is of course well known for having gobs of fans who often are just residents of the state and not always alums. In Missouri attracting those types has always been a bit harder in terms of prying their time and money away from the Cards, Chiefs, Blues, etc.
Bottom line being that the level of college football passion in Missouri is better than what you'd find on the East Coast or West Coast, was in the upper to middle of the pack in Big 12 country, but has work to do to rise to the level of the South. But again, I'd rather be having to work to keep up with a league that dominates the nation's Top 30 in attendance than be slumming in a league full of apathy.

The better question is who will win the West 1st, Mizzou or Ole Miss?

When Miami clears whatever the fallout of their latest scandal and is one of two teams added to the east Missouri will move westward.

I don't think Miami will ever get an SEC invite for several reasons:
1. They don't really add new TV markets.
2. I'm sure Florida would object to this strongly.
3. Shitty, fair-weather fans that don't support the team. Last year, they averaged just 46,000 per game... and that was up a bit over recent years. (Miami is an awful sports town.)
4. They bring way too much baggage.
If the SEC expands to 16, look to the states of North Carolina & Virginia; or possibly to OU and OSU if the Big 12 further erodes.

With future expansion, yes (especially if a certain team from Tallahassee ever grows a pair).

That team from Tally will never grow a pair. Do you remember one of their cowardly reasons why not joining the SEC? "We don't want to play both Auburn and Alabama during the same season." Bowden and the FSU board were cowards. If you talk to any FSU fan, they'll tell you they joined the ACC to upgrade their basketball program. I guess basketball is the money maker for college sports in the state of Florida. I know many FSU fans who are regretting joining the ACC. How many fans from Tally will actually make those two thousand mile road trips? At least the ACC covers the entire Atlantic Coast. The ACC is the eastern version og the Pac 12. Look how close Tally is to Auburn and Baton Rouge. Bowden and friends fricked that school over for the purpose of winning. The ACC really packs that stadium in Tally.

I remember something about Bowden saying that "the ACC has more tradition" back when they joined in the early 90's.

Inviting Florida State to the SEC wouldn't make much sense anyway. Plus, why would Florida want them?

SEC EAST
Auburn
Georgia
Florida
Florida State
SEC CENTRAL
Alabama
Tennessee
Ole Miss
Mississippi State
SEC WEST
LSU
Arkansas
Mizzou
Texas A&M
SEC NORTH
South Carolina
Clemson
Kentucky
Vanderbilt
Not exactly the most balanced, but works geographically, and parity would come eventually (**points at South Carolina and Arkansas now versus when they joined**). Set up two permanent inter-divisional games, like Auburn would play Bama and LSU or Cousin Clem or somebody.
I miss the Conference Expansion Board.

He also said something along the lines of, "frick playing Alabama, Auburn, and Georgia every year".

Dat SEC East looks stacked.
Posted on 4/19/12 at 7:32 pm to BreakawayZou83
Eh, it's fine. FSU's perennially overrated and UGA's the biggest underachiever in the NCAA.
Posted on 4/19/12 at 7:36 pm to TheSandman
East: Clemson, FSU, GT, Miami, SC, UF, UGA, UT
West: Arky, Auburn, A&M, Bama, LSU, OU, Okla St, Texas

Good luck winning that conference. Also, why would you want to elevate your in-state competition like that?
Posted on 4/19/12 at 7:56 pm to BreakawayZou83
FSU GT and Clemson will never join the SEC because of the SEC schools in their state... Im not sure why people think they would get invited

Left the conference years ago. To hell with them.

Texas A&M will have to win an SEC west.
at that point, Bama and Aubie will move to the east.
Vandy and Missouri will be in the west from then on.
The divisions would be way too imbalanced. Bama, Florida, Auburn, Tennessee, and Georgia would be in the SEC East compared to LSU, Arky, aTm, Ole Miss, and Mizzou in the SEC West. The best way to split the power of the divisions evenly would be to have Bama move to the SEC East and move Mizzou to the SEC West. The SEC East would be better at the top but the SEC West would be a deeper division from top to bottom so it would even out.
