tigerboyinhogland - there is one reason and one reason only why that couldn't happen and that is that Bob Stoops is scurred of SEC competition. Or more to the point, he likes his little set up he has now of just needing to beat up on Texas and usually one other decent challenger each year and being able to waltz right into a BCS game, rather than really having to grind and earn it in your league. That's the only reason that the PAC was something OU was willing to move to but not the SEC.

I thought Mizzou was geographically closer to the Eastern schools, primarily because they're further north closer to UT, UK, and Vandy?

No way. Columbia is 7.5 hours away from Lexington and Nashville. 10 hours from Knoxville.

eta: 8 hours from Oxford and 5.5 from Fayetteville. I always assumed Arky was a lot closer with the way they go back and forth.

Busey - offhand I can tell you those Lexington and Knoxville drives are still closer for Mizzou than would be College Station, Auburn or Tuscaloosa...

Oxford is probably closer. We know Arkansas is but they are our permanent cross anyway.

That leaves Starkville and Baton Rouge and I really don't know how they stack up without looking it up. My bet is that Baton Rouge is both are somewhere in between Lexington and Knoxville on your list or are at least similar.

The better question for you as a Kentucky Wildcat is this - what is the closer drive for your people? That 7.5 hour trip to Columbia, MO or the trips from Lexington to Gainesville, Athens or Columbia SC? I would imagine it has to be shorter than Gainesville but I'm curious on the other two.

Yea. I just assumed there had to be a couple schools that were closer than 7.5 hours.

From Colombia to Fayetteville it is about 5 and a half hours to 6 hours.. From Fayetteville to Baton Rouge is about 9-10 hours.

You would be taking the same route So about 14-16 hours

ThaKaptin - what is this "preserve perennial rivalries" that you speak of?

Mainly the Bama/Tenn, Bama/Auburn, and LSU/Auburn games (LSU and Auburn arent exactly rivals, LSU claims to have no rivals, but its always an important game that a lot of people really enjoy)

MizzouKills - I think most of us in the Mizzou camp are fine with it...provided of course that over time our augmented recruiting efforts in Florida, Georgia and Tennessee are enough to offset any lost recruiting efforts in Texas that we might still gain by playing A&M every year. If they don't, and our on the field product starts to suffer, then you would see me shift to the get Mizzou to the SEC West camp pretty quick. But the distances between schools thing doesn't really seem like a big deal to me at all.

Per Google Maps, distances in miles from Colombia, MO:

East
Nashville - 431
Lexington - 463
Knoxville - 609
Athens - 735
Columbia - 870
Gainsville - 1008

Average 686

West
Fayettville - 312
Oxford - 477
Starkville - 575
Tuscaloosa - 618
Auburn - 737
Baton Rouge - 772
College Station - 779

Average 610

No chance in hell Mizzou moves to the West in a 14 team SEC.

It's a slow day at work

Yea. I just saw 7.5 hours and wrongly assumed at least Oxford would be closer. Apparently not, though.

ThaKaptin - oh I know what you meant and completely understand and respect those great rivalries and the need to preserve them.

I was just sorta poking fun at Texas and kansas for not "getting it" and discontinuing great 100 year rivalries with aTm and Mizzou respectively just cuz we are moving to your conference. Apparently Texas and kansas aren't aware of the rich tradition of great out-of-conference rivalries that SEC schools have cultivated, i.e. Clemson-South Carolina, Florida-Florida State, Georgia-Georgia Tech, Kentucky-Louisville. Apparently those are all fine but adding Mizzou-kansas and Texas-Texas A&M to that list would be a travesty in their eyes.

It basicly boils down to the fact that they are both cry baby bitches that took their ball and went home cause they didnt get their way.

Should be in the West now. AU belongs in the East.

I agree with this. Auburn is so close the West border with Georgia that they recruit a lot of players from Georgia. Plus the oldest SEC rivalry is between UGA an Auburn. May as well just put them in the same division.

aside from the rivalries issues you'd end up with less balanced divisions than we have at present (if auburn moved to the east)

east:
florida
tenn
uga
auburn

west
alabama
lsu

that's how the big six would be broken up. granted three of the next four best programs (arky, A&M, missouri, and perhaps south carolina) would be in the west - but the east would be disproportionately stacked

FWIW in that type of scenario Missouri and A&M should be excited - it would probably increase their chance of winning their division

We'll keep them over here and keep our rivalry with Tenn thank you very much.

At the rate it's going,I see super conferences evolving and the SEC becoming extinct. I see State,Vandy and Missori being left out. Playing in a 16 team conference eliminates rivals playing on yrly basis. Super Conferences will bring in more revenue and better ratings. OU and Texas will bump State and Vandy.
I see a Western Conference with Northern,Southern and Eastern counterparts.

this kind of thing would ultimately be counterproductive IMO

if you are the Yankees you need somebody to play the role of the Orioles

the powerhouse teams of the SEC benefit substantially by including teams like the Missouri, A&M, Arkansas, South Carolina types. Especially because those teams are entries into states where the SEC would otherwise be absent

Bernie Moore - regarding Mizzou being "left out" in your list, i would respectfully suggest that the STL and KC market sizes would have Mizzou gobbled up by one of these giant entities you speak of before a South Carolina or Arkansas or Ole Miss would. For the same reasons that the SEC just gobbled Mizzou up instead of West Virginia.

at that point, Bama and Aubie will move to the east.

Vandy and Missouri will be in the west from then on.

I want this to happen so bad now.
