Let’s be clear, I’m not sure the door is totally closed on this happening again sometime in the next couple of years, depending on how the Lebby era goes. Jury is still out on that given that there’s been clear progress but State still doesn’t have an SEC win under Lebby yet. That said, when it comes to Mullen, repeat coaching hires have a really iffy history of working out.

I have a ton of respect for Dan’s tenure at State and think he did a ton to energize the program and fan base which in turn helped the city of Starkville see noticeable improvements over the years. I think if he had to do it over again he probably wouldn’t have taken the Florida job and would’ve just stayed at State.

I don’t think he was a serious candidate when the job opened up in 2023. New AD at the time that wanted to put his own stamp on the program. It’s really important for State as a program that Lebby ends up working out because they’ve had a ton of coaching turnover since 2017 and it slowly killed the program.

Why would State want him back? He made the decision to leave knowing he had a championship team in place in 2018.
So that chapter is closed and his history sliding farther into the rear view mirror.
Plus second go arounds seldom go very well.
He is where he needs to be right now.
I do appreciate what he did at State but it is over. Period.

Look at what he is doing in Vegas, he is obviously a good coach still
Let's see how the season finishes before drawing conclusions

He now claims that y’all didn’t give him resources (that you gave the guy after).

And that his recruiting was fine.
So he isn't taking accountability and hasn't learned shite.

If someone isn't dumb enough to hire him away from UNLV he'll be fired from there in about 3-4 years.

Still think he's never gonna give a rats arse about defense though.

Considering that 7 games into his tenure at UNLV, with a 6-1 record, their fans are calling for the DC to be fired already, you may be onto something

Nah he says Napier had the same issue.

He's not entirely wrong.

Mullen did not like recruiting. Then NIL hit. A dream for a coach that hates recruiting. But UF thought it was a passing fad, was going to get shut down. They worked to get legislation passed that banned it in state.

Meanwhile every other state opened the spigot. Mullen already hated recruiting now he was recruiting kids for $0 who were getting $500k+ deals elsewhere.

He gave up. Responded to reporters questions about bad ratings saying he'd talk about it during "recruiting season"

UF realized this wasn't going away but they were a year behind every university. Unsurprisingly Mullen couldn't win games and didn't want to.
