lol - first, you need to win a division title.
My bad, too late.

They may be 4th or 5th before Georgia wipes the floor with them November 7. There’s no coming back from that massacre really.

No one has ever gotten more mileage out of one win than Josh Heupel for beating Alabama at home.
They storm fields, throw perfectly good goalposts in the river, and basically declare themselves national champions. It is a syndrome in the SEC that afflicts those with visions of grandeur. TAMU, Viles, the barn just had a 10th anniversary of an Iron Bowl win this year. Not a championship, just a freakin' win. The shorthorns have been flexing and parading around like the toughest kid on the block.
It is the ALABAMA syndrome.

I feel like they are much stronger than 7th or 8th place.
What is holding back the perception?
Universe just providing a balance to the UTK fanbase.

The offense that Josh completely redid and refined at UCF? That’s amazing.

Gimmicky offenses will take you so far before teams start figuring it out.

Being an old DC by trade, I'm guessing that Venables will notice that your backend of the defense has to be totally rebuilt. I see a lot of opponents go routes this season. I mean, even more than normal, which was a lot.

Lost their QB.
Lost a 1000 yard RB (as well as their #3)
They are relying on WR's named Squirrel and Nimrod.
Tennessee lost most of their secondary. The LB's returning were "meh" last year and probably will be again. The only real defensive plus they have is the DL.
They're projected where they are for a reason.
Could they be better if Nico is lights out? Sure. But they were telling us Milton would be lights out before last season. Hope isn't proof.

He doesn’t need to be lights out. A little improvement in the secondary and this is a 10 win team with a pedestrian Nico.
Have they announced which UGA football player was arrested last night for reckless driving and a super speeder?

Seriously though, I think it's just Heupel. It is a system. Teams adjust.
That said, they have 3 decent games on their schedule in OU, Bama, and UGA. Win one of those and they are most likely a 10 win team. So, I'm not sure why they are predicted as low as they are.

Sampson had 604 yards on 102 carries. Despite splitting time with 2 other guys that are on NFL rosters today. He’s over 1,000 yards in his 2 seasons. Hardly hopes and dreams.

Unless he was at UCF he hasn’t seen this O. This isn’t the O of Oklahoma or Mizzou or any of the other stops. UCF was the 1st place he had control of recruiting or planning enough to rough out the O he runs. And UT was the first place he had the resources to actually run it as intended.

If depth is the issue, why was Heupel so competitive in his first year? I’m not trolling (LSU Fan) but my overall impression is slightly higher than most on here…I can buy the inexperience at QB…so not really sure why LSU is consistently ranked ahead.
The depth is not as much of a problem on offense as defense. You can win a lot of games with offense but you need good defense to win a championship.
The two worst defenses to win a natty in the last decade were helped along by two of the best offenses ever. So UT would need an offense like that to overcome depth costing them a few games because they couldn’t produce stops late.

I never thought they’d win a CWS but they did. As annoying as Serranseaux is with all of his psychotic alters which are all over this thread, Tenn. is going to be very good this year. Nico could propel to a Heisman front runner as JD did last year.
