A 24 team playoff is just a new way to hand out a participation trophy. We will see a bunch of teams that have absolutely no chance of winning the national championship playing in the playoff. More playoff games does not mean great games. I don’t know how many Wild Card teams in the NFL have ever made it to the Super Bowl much less win the Super Bowl. It can’t have happened many times. I think Big Ben did it with the Steelers several years back. Outside of that I can’t remember any examples. It’s probably rare for a Wild Card team in the NFL to even make it to the Conference Championship game. I doubt Wild Card teams have ever won at a high enough clip to even justify having Wild Card slots. This move in college football will be no different. There aren’t 12 teams good enough most years that could get hot and run the table in the playoff and win it all. It will eventually happen I’m sure but it will be a very rare feat. If it would be a rare feat at 12 then it will most likely never happen from 13-24. So what’s the point in doing it then?
