Paul Dietzel, who won LSU's first NC in 1958, was responsible for them leaving the ACC to be an independent iirc. Seems like a bizarre move, but hindsight is 20/20

They were good, but had they played in the SECW they would have averaged a minimum of 3-4 losses at best during that stretch and would have had no shot against Bama or LSU in 2011.
