There's a simple explanation....
Grew up in Alabama....moved to Georgia in high school. Went to undergrad at a private univ in Macon and just recently got my MBA at UGA.
Been in Georgia for over 20 years....and there were tons of people that wanted me to switch to being a DAWG. But when you grow up an Alabama fan...immersed in the rivalry of what is Tide/War Eagle on a daily basis....it's hard to switch. Loyalty is loyalty.
ROLL TIDE? rolll tide....

without the A we can't really use the UGAy moniker, and that's just too much to give up just to have the acronym make sense.

I've been known to throw around UTK or UTA sometimes for clarity's sake, but not really as an insult.
When you meet some one from the university of Texas and they say they went to ut, just be like oh no way I really like Tennessee. nothing pissed them off more.

UT established 1794
UTX established 1883

the state of Tennessee wasn't established until 1796, making it impossible for there to be a UT in 1794. UT traces its charter back to Blount College and East Tennessee Univ. (neither state institutions). The state didn't designate the "University of Tennessee" until 1879 when it did so to get the land grant status and the Federal endowment.
btw... UGA was the first state chartered, UNC was the first to enroll students, but USC was the first to get state appropriated public funds, which technically makes it the oldest state school.
