Which begs, the question. Why did ol Roy go to UNC?

Since Wooden last coached at UCLA, they have 29 tournament appearances, 1 NC, 6 FFs (3 under Howland), 3 elite eights, 7 sweet 16s, a record of 852-349 (.709), their coaches in that time frame:
Gene Bartow - resigned
Gary Cunningham - resigned
Larry Brown - resigned
Larry Farmer - resigned
Walt Hazzard - fired
Jim Harrick - fired
Steve Lavin - fired
Ben Howland - fired
Bartow and Cunningham went a combined 120-17 and were considered failures.
If that were relevant than no one would take the Nebraska and ND football jobs or the UNC or Kentucky basketball jobs. Also, african american coaches wouldn't coach at Arkansas. Demanding jobs are demanding because of what you can achieve there and what they mean to the sport. That's why coaches lust after those gigs.

That was "home" to him.

You have to acknowledge though if he didn't push through in 2005 he would probably have been ushered out. It is how those gigs are, yes?

Are you saying he was going to be fired if he didn't win a NC?
Kansas has 3 NCs in their entire history, so no he would not have been fired.

Yes. That's what I'm saying. If he didn't win a title with that team at UNC he would have been under immense pressure. The top six were all drafted. Expectations are rough at the top gigs.

Since 1975 this is what program comparable to UCLA have had:
Kentucky: 4 NCs, 8 FFs, 17 Elite Eights, 21 Sweet 16s, 30 Tournament Appearances
North Carolina: 4 NCs, 12 FFs, 19 Elite Eights, 24 Sweet 16s, 36 Tournament Appearances
Duke: 4 NCs, 12 FFs, 14 Elite Eights, 23 Sweet 16s, 32 Tournament Appearances
This, not the shadow of Wooden, is what is getting them fired IMO.

At UNC, yes, you have to beat Duke and NC-State.
Kansas is not a NC demanding school, conference championship demanding, yes.
UCLA only hangs NC banners, figure it out.

They don't hang Final Four banners?

He's from North Carolina, played at North Carolina, and was an assistant at North Carolina.

That's exactly the point. I think you got lost somewhere in the crossfire. People clamor for jobs like UNC and UCLA. The expectations are high and many get squashed. It doesn't make the jobs less attractive which your original post suggested.

No, only NCs that they win, no runner-ups.

he will take the job and then backout within a day

UCLA isn't as attractive as many think due to its location, California (taxes), their facilities, and possible NCAA sanctions (recruiting violations).
The idea that they will just go and get whoever they want, Donovan/Smart, is laughable.

They should. You get a nice chunk of hardware for winning your region. I know that UK does, not sure about other blue blood programs.

Be sure and really give that strawman a thrashing. He's earned it!

They honestly don't have enough room to hang all those banners.

Everyone else does, but UCLA.
Made sense when Wooden was there, but it is now like ND not being able to except their place in the modern day world of the sport.

The same reason you see Saban's name any time there's a big football opening.
Fans always hope for the best no matter how unrealistic.
IMO, you'd see Saban take another job before Donovan and Nick ain't going anywhere.
