James Franklin didn’t want that SEC smoke.
Can’t blame him.

He’s afraid of that SEC schedule

Hiring Franklin would not have been cheaper. He had almost the exact same buyout with PSU that Kelly did. He’d have wanted all of $10 Mil to come here.
I think (not totally sure because Va Tech hasn’t released details) he’s getting $9 mil / year from Va Tech.
As for better coach - his resume looks just like BK’s at Notre Dame. Soft schedule in the B1G, can’t win the big game.
How’s Franklin any better? More importantly, does he have high potential? I don’t think he does. He is what he is - dontcha think?

Franklin will excel at a school with lower expectations

He has been to the playoffs, worked a miracle at Vandy,
and would has been relatively inexpensive. Were Florida
and LSU blinded in their pursuit of Lane ?
I think you are asking the wrong question. Why didn’t Franklin want to coach in the SEC?
He can get away with coaching in The Big 10 or the ACC, but I don’t think he would have done well if he came back (especially with a 9 game slate). He would have elevated the team in question, but he still fails to beat the big boys. He needs to get the training wheels back on his bike.

He’s getting 8.2 mil. Say he gets 10 mil at LSU, what’s Lane going to get, 14 milllion
plus more money for assistants ? That’s a lot cheaper.

Franklin would have been great for Auburn. Just a solid kinda boring coach. That's probably why they didn't even look at him.
