Why did SEC teams play each other in bowls?

I see that this happened in the Sugar Bowl, and also in the Bluebonnet Bowl and Liberty Bowl.

I see these matchups:

1953 Sugar: Georgia Tech def Ole Miss
1964 Sugar: Bama def Ole Miss
1965 Liberty: Ole Miss def Auburn
1972 Bluebonnet: Tennessee def LSU

Of course, the Sugar Bowl rematch at the end of the ‘59 season between Ole Miss and LSU.

Was this simply because the matchups were attractive, the teams didn’t play in the regular season - with one exception - and there weren’t definite bowl tie-ins?

With it being that far ago, you don't really know what may have happened.

There were so few bowls. I want to say up until the 80s there were 8-10 bowls. If u weren't at least 8-3 u had zero chance of getting a bowl.

Also, the SEC only had 6 or 7 conference games then so not many folks played often. I think we played ole miss 3 times in the 80s. We didn't play LSU every year until the late 50s.

Things were more regionalized. Think about if there was no SEC Championship Game and Alabama and Georgia didn't play each other. The entire SEC footprint would have wanted to see them matchup.

The SEC teams wouldn’t play integrated teams or the segregated south wouldn’t accept northern integrated teams.

Geography and travel concerns, limited # of bowls, among other reasons

It’s just interesting that you don’t see this happening with other conferences with few exceptions.

We beat Tennessee in the TaxSlayer Bowl following the 69 season.

Bobby Dodd refused to play in the state of Mississippi, so I guess we usually didn't play Ole Miss or Miss State. Not trolling, I've heard that stated as fact.
