A&M was about to murder LSU. LSU could not stop anything. anything. for the first quarter and a half. I think Manziel had 200 of his 275 yards passing through the first 20 minutes of the game.
Then LSU made some defensive adjustments that was able to contain the run up the middle and some of the short, quick passes.
In other games, when Manziel took off to run, he would typically find some space up the middle or take off to the corner and pick up the first down. However, against LSU, the D-line and LBers were too fast and did not allow him to reach the corner and turn it upfield.
Manziel finished with 27 yards rushing. He was running for his life in the backfield the rest of the game (after the first 20 minutes) and he couldn't find any running lanes. He couldn't pick up those first downs with his legs. This caused him to make some very uncharacteristic mistakes.
That's the reason LSU beat A&M even though Mett overthrew our receivers by 5 yards on roughly 30% of his throws.
UF has a great defense and played A&M in Manziel's first ever game. Bama doesn't have as fast a front 7 as LSU... and Manziel was able to pick up those first downs with his feet pretty easily... or he was able to get some space and find the open man. Against LSU, he didn't have any space.
Pretty much THIS....

Nick Saban wanted Johnny to win the Heisman. What Nick wants he gets.

Because Nussmeier got cute on the goaline and refused to run it despite having 4 downs to go just 6 little yards.
A great number of aTm fans seem to easily remember the 20-0 first quarter but somehow manage to forget that they had to make a goal line stand to survive actually getting out gained in total yardage and outscored 24-9 in quarters 2,3, and 4.
They punched Bama in the mouth and held on. Four doses of Lacy or Yeldon and folks are asking if Sumlin can win a big game in the SEC.

Texas A&M didn't beat Bama. We beat ourselves.
Didn't you know that?

Ran on first down after the long pass and were stuffed. You were scared to run or else scared Yeldon might fumble again.

Hey OP, who is Stoops recruiting at Cleveland Heights?
Posted on 12/11/12 at 2:57 pm to UKWildcatsFAN
LSU's D is faster and more athletic.

He just met with him. Are yall recruiting anyone else in the area? He has another visit this evening.

To be honest, it is because LSU has a much better D. They're faster, stronger, and more consistent.
Also, their D Coordinator is the best in the business, while Bama's DC looked completely lost while JFF made him look foolish.
LSU is a better football team, plain and simple.

Well I appreciate the compliment. However, I think LSU is not so much better as a better matchup against A&M.

Negative. First down was an attempted pass and McCarron was sacked. He was lucky to scramble back close to the line before going down.

Why did LSU beat A&M but Bama did not?
Couple reasons:
1) You can't play against Manziel and that offense while lining up with 4 down linemen. LSU realized that after the first quarter and went to a mustang package with 3 down linemen, 3 LB, 5 DB. While Bama usually plays a 3-4 defense which works against Manziel if you watched the Florida game, Saban and Smart decided to move a LB up as a down linemen to get pressure off the corner in an effort to make Manziel throw it quicker than he wanted to. Wrong move. I was watching the game and was absolutely stunned that they didn't pick that up from the LSU and Florida games. You can't rush Manziel, only contain him in the pocket with your DEs and get push with the DTs.
2) Bama didn't have the personel at DT to push through and move Manziel out the pocket. It's no secret that Bama doesn't have outstadning DL play individually, they all just play well as a unit, but there was no consistent DT presence to collapse the pocket.
3) Bama is coming off an emotional comeback win against a big rival. There is always a lag effect for both LSU and Bama the week after they play easch other.
4) LSU ran the ball and didn't try to have Mett win the game for them. When LSU was down 12-0, they still kept pounding on aTm and wore them down. For some reason Bama thinks the ball in McCarron's hands is more effective than in Lacy or Yeldon's. THey finally realized it isn't against UGA. He's good for a PA pass here and there, but Lacy and Yeldon running behind that OL are what makes them successful, not McCarron throwing the ball.
5) Wind. There was a 15mph wind blowing the length of the field at aTm when LSU played there. Both QBs were missing throws long and short depending on which way they were going.
I am by no means an expert, but these were my observations between the two games. I think the biggest issue was #1, becasue it allowed LSU to contain Manziel and not let him convert 3rd downs, which he did at will on Bama.
